The buyer of an item I just sold is someone I know that lives in my town. Rather than pack a painting for shipping UPS, I'd like to refund shipping and the buyer can pick up directly from me. How can I do this?

Make sure buyer is going to request a pick up first.
You can always refund shipping in item purchased in shipping.
Hopefully, its been paid already before anything.
There's the lost of tracking and the honor system where buyer states they received the item.
Personally, I would do UPS for I have tracking that the item has been delivered. It's not like it's not going far so I can't imagine it getting lost or damaged.
I have a lot of buyers who live in the city I live in. I prefer everything by mail.
Have you sold anything in a month's time frame? If not, you may not get any funds for 30+ days as well. Having buyer get item quicker will not receive your funds quicker.

If you haven't printed a label I believe there is a way to mark it as picked up... but I can't remember. You are on a time crunch so I'd recommend you contact customer service and have them walk you through it. Start with the automated and ask it "have eBay call me", and the option will pop up for ebay to call you 🙂

You can refund the buyer.
Change the listing to have "local pickup"
The buyer repurchase with the local pickup option.
This makes it clean and gives the buyer a code to give you at pick up...
