can you just use freight instead of custom?

I've never used freight but this package will be over a hundred dollars with custom

You get to choose how and by whom it's shipped.  There are size and weight limits for each type of shipping.  So not all shipments can go all ways.   What is the weight and size of the shipment ?   With that we can suggest your best options.  Freight is needed for items often over 150 pounds or very oversize.
