buyer asking to return item 45+ days after receiving it

I sold a used external hard drive at the end of february. Tracking shows it was delivered on Feb 26th. The buyer contacted me today asking "Hey you know what this disk thad you sell to me its bad". I formatted and tested it before shipping. The listing did not accept returns. I have replied to the buyer asking what the actual malfunction is. I can't believe that they have had it for 45 days and just now discovered that it doesn't work.  There is a small chance that it did malfunction after some use, but I sold it as a used drive and no warranty was implied.

Should I offer to accept a return?

I wouldn’t offer a return. I’d put them on my BBL. eBay won’t back them up here.

The buyer replied to me with this "Its broken i just find out just right now because i buy this disk for my sister in cuba so i just coming fron visit her ibring the disk as e gift and wen we connected ist broken its not good"

I suspect this buyer is going to ask for a refund without returning the item. I won't do that.

I really wouldn't mind accepting a return as long as they haven't damaged the drive. Would it put me at any risk to offer that?

If it's outside of your accepted returns timeframe, you don't need to accept it back. Let them know your return policy is ... 14 days once delivered, 30 days ... whatever it is.

Reply return for refund, if a case is opened pick return for refund in your choose's.

Nope. It’s been more than 30 days since delivery. OP shouldn’t offer a return and if a request is opened he should decline it.

I offered to accept a return including shipping (no choice as returns were not accepted in the listing). The buyer replied saying "Dont even worry like i said the item its in cuba i did bring something thad its damage back thanks any way i just want to let you know thad the item was bad and its not fear but its ok this is the risk tha i have to take because i buy and use really use item"

Why did they contact me? They didn't ask for a refund or return. I offered to take it back and he replied like he is being nice to me by accusing me of selling a broken disk?

Probably knows he won't get anywhere with an ebay case & hoped you would simply issue a refund and let him keep it.

Sounds like a scam. Seen that stuff like that before. The HDD shouldn't fail like that so fast unless it was used as a "package football" by the shipping company.

I asked him why he contacted me if he didn't want anything. He replied "Nop at all the point its to let you know what happent if i want refund the first think i will do its contact ebay and open e case". I then suggested that they reformat the drive using his sisters pc.

Why would he not give specifics earlier about the malfunction? Did it fail to power on? Did it fail to spin? Did they get a error message when trying to save to it?

And now this person has my home address from the shipping label. If he is some kind of scammer, what can he do with it?

And whats with the guys spelling and grammer?

He's Cuban English is probably not his first language.

Sounds to me like he was just wanting to give you a heads up and see if you would refund without him returning it.

At this point in time you don't need to do anything except ignore him and put him on your blocked there's list.

Don't worry that he has your address.  Short of coming to your house, he isn't going to do anthing with that information.

BTW, even if he wasn't past the 30 day SNAD return window, he would not be covered by the MBG since he sent the HD to another country.

This is reassuring to hear. All of the advice I have got from this forum in the past says that as long as the buyer claims SNAD they can get anything they want. Also, their is no proof that he sent it to Cuba. He could just say he lied about that but not about SNAD.

Unfortunately there are posters who give incorrect advice and ignore the fact that the MBG has expired and that forwarding service was used.

You actually can prove the item was forwarded by googling the address it was shipped to. If you ever run into a situation like this and it’s within the 30 day MBG, you can win the SNAD by contacting customer service & pointing out that the buyer is registered in Cuba (or whatever country) and that you shipped to a freight forwarder & they can confirm that by googling the address.
