I am getting a "You are not authorized to perform this action at this time." message when asking eBay to step in to resolve an issue with a seller. Does anyone know what is going on with eBay's customer support? I purchased an item and the item sent WAS NOT as advertised.  I need to return the wrong item for a full refund and the seller is refusing. Any help is greatly appreciated.

@twofold89509  How many days has your return request been open?

I opened the return request on April 20th. I had a very contentious back and forth email conversation with the seller, and now all communication has ended. I have a photo of the item sent, a mobile phone holder and a webcam install disk verses an actual webcam.

@twofold89509  I am asking ebay staff for clarification on the temporary change to return request timelines.

It is not clear if the seller also has 5 full business days before a buyer can ask ebay to step in and help if the seller doesn't issue a return label.    Is that the reason the buyer is receiving this message?

This refers to how the return request is handled AFTER the item is returned to the seller:

  • Sellers—We have increased the number of business days you have to issue a refund to 5 business days, starting on the date that shipment tracking confirms the item was delivered back to you.

@comics-scifi-collectibles Thanks for reaching out to eBay staff on my behalf, I really appreciate the help. Yes, the seller refuses to allow me to return the incorrect product for a full refund.

Hi @comics-scifi-collectibles - the change to return time frames and processing times did not impact the time a Seller has to review and respond to a return request. OP should still be able to ask eBay to step in by now.

Hi @twofold89509 - would you grab a screenshot of the error you get and post it here so I can get it reviewed? After that's done I'd definitely suggest contacting Customer Support (via email or social media) to have the return request reviewed and so they can step in and help.

My personal preference is always to use the social media function (via Twitter or Facebook). There will be some delays as they're seeing increased volume at the moment, but if you send them a direct message/private message with your registered email address, first and last name on file, ZIP code and a little bit about the situation they can jump into helping you!

Perhaps type "See buyer-seller messages" where it says "Add details (optional)" in case it's actually not optional?

Also, it's possible you pushed the deadline further and further out each time you wrote to the seller.

I have the same issue when I ask ebay to step in for now. What should I do?

@ise710   I have seen other members report the same issue. This is the first screenshot that I've seen though.    Talking back and forth to try and work things out doesn't change when a buyer can ask ebay to step in. Here's the Op's screenshot.

@kynexcorp   Contact CS on social media.  Just be patient as they are swamped and might take a few days to get back to you.

Contact customer service by sending a private message on social media. You leave a message and an eBay employee will get back to you as soon as possible. To speed things up you can leave your registered account information in the PRIVATE message: Full name, address, phone number, email address, user ID and a brief explanation of your problem.

@kynexcorp  Thanks for the screenshots that tyler@ebay  can share with tech support.

To get help with asking ebay to step in you will need to contact CS on social media.  OR if you do not use social media you can use email, but social media would be the better option.

Hi @twofold89509, thank you for the update! Looks like this is a technical issue but Customer Service should be able to help you if you contact them using one of the options tyler@ebay shared. We'll get this passed on to our tech teams for review so we can address what might be causing this problem.
