I don't have a printer. I can save $1.00 if I print a label, instead of doing it at the counter.

Can I just print the mailing label with the delivery conformation? And just write that on the label?

Or if I go to staples and bring a USB drive with me, how much would it cost to print 1 sheet?

I just went to staple's site. Is it really 14 cents?

If that's the case, I'm only out 14 cents, instead of 98 cents that the post office will charge.

You can find pretty cheap printers now days

I just paid $19.00 for a new all in one printer.

The money you save printing your own labels, will pay for the printer pretty quick.

Have a great day.

The Jersey City Library website's rules of conduct about using their computers say that the charge for printing is 20 cents per page; see point #6.  I suppose that policy might be out of date.  Whether it's accurate or not, you're better-off going to Staples.

I found your original post confusing ("Can I just print the mailing label with the delivery conformation? And just write that on the label?").  You do have to print out the label and attach it to the package; you can't just copy off the address and tracking number by hand.

I was talking about printing the label to a PDF where they put in all the information and DC. And I just do and write that down on some paper. Then attach that paper to the package.

But as I stated earlier, not all of the branches have printers.

Like I said, it is only 1 or 2 items a month that I sell.

So until I start selling more, it is not worth it.

$19.00 may be cheap, but that ink is most likely double. As little as I sell, the ink will dry up before it is all used.

I'm not sure if the "they" you're referring to is your library or your nearby friends, but I am not telling you to buy a printer. I'm simply saying that you may have more printing options nearby than you're aware of, and I would definitely be surprised to hear that your library has no means of printing a page for one of their patrons, if they're offering computer services in the first place.

Regarding your original question, you cannot buy the label on-line and then simply write its tracking number on the package, because the barcodes you see on the label are important proof that you have in fact pre-paid your postage. You print out the label, cut it to size and tape it to your package.

I too felt your initial post was confusing, so I tried to interpret what you asking and respond accordingly. All the people who have responded are volunteers who were trying to help you. Churlish replies have no place in these forums.

It's a good idea to print the label to a pdf file first, then print the pdf file.

My local library doesn't have printers. Only computers. And those computers are out in the open, where anyone can see what you're doing.

Well, if the local branch doesn't have printers, maybe it would be worth while to go to the main branch if you need something like this. And be sure to mention it to the librarians, so they will know there is a demand for this service in their community.

But if the library doesn't work out for you, think creatively. In my case, the library is maybe 2 miles away. But, when I was in a bind one time, I walked into the salon where I get my hair and nails done, a quarter mile from my house, with a jump drive in hand. They have a printer so they can print out  receipts for customers. I had to crawl under the desk on hands and knees to find the USB slot on the computer, but I left the place in less than 10 minutes with a shipping label on paper clutched in my fist.

You can also look for a laser jet printer online. Ink cartridges for a laser jet printer last almost forever. I have one, and I don't think I have ever needed to change the cartridge. It only prints black and white, which is just what you need for labels.

Unless you live at/near or work at/near a Staples, then you are also out the cost of transportation to get there.

It's only 10 minute walk from my house. About a quarter mile.

Since you are so close, that does sound like a viable solution then.

I'm gonna take a walk down to staples. I just didn't know how much there charge, and if their site was showing me the correct price or not.

It was actually free. Because after the $5 preauthorization fee. I put in the USB drive, it wouldn't recognize it.

So the attendant did it on her computer, and told me don't worry about it, since their copiers were having problems.

The printers are usually behind the check out desk.

As for the computers being out in the open, so what. You can set everything up at home, go to the library and log in and hit print, log out, go to the check out and pay, collect your label and go.
