Why are some sellers not shipping to California? I understand the will only ship to the continental US but I see a lot of items I'm trying to buy or bid on say; " NOTICE: I will NOT ship to California, if you win the auction and an pay online and I find your address is California I will promptly cancel and refund your money. I will not ship to California! If you have a California resale/sellers license than disregard this notice." No wonder Amazon is killing it. So does anyone know what's going on with this no shipping to commiefornia stuff?

There ARE some valid reasons to block some states, though, and I wish ebay would allow that. Slot machines come to mind - even antique ones. There are certain states you cannot ship them to. So if someone from that state buys it, and pays for it, the seller would have to cancel and eat the paypal fees.

I noticed in quite a few of my car magazine I buy car parts thru they will not sell certain parts to Ca. either, mainly certain emission and high performance parts.

Thanks for the link mam98031 but yes, I am one of the ones who take my items to the post office. It is what works for me at this time. Perhaps in the future, I will look at the online source. Regardless, I cringe around this time of the year with the postal rates seeming to increase every year.

1 : heavy item for far distance is not fruitful for buyer or seller due to changes of item get damage
Damage can happen anywhere, although the longer the shipment is in transit the more likely it is to be damaged.
The seller should be packing to withstand a 50lb weight being dropped on the shipment from a two foot height, because that can happen on a conveyor belt.

2 : late delivery
The seller who worries about late delivery should extend her handling time to provide a cushion.
EBay gives a delivery window based on the service the seller is using and that handling time.
3 : high shipping cost means buyer will also buy with higher price.
The seller doesn't pay for shipping, the Buyer pays for shipping.
If she thinks the total price is too high, she will not buy and there is no problem.
If she thinks the price is fine, she buys and there is no problem.
Free Shipping should not be used when the shipping cost needs to be Calculated.
Free Shipping means a Flat Rate has been included in the asking price to cover the cost of shipping.
the market gap for heavy inventory
Some products are not appropriate for mail order.
Anvils, frozen foods, and time- sensitive concert tickets come to mind.

We have a higher weight level for letters, and nothing about rigidity (where does that leave mailing photos?) or varying thicknesses. The postal clerks just take the thickest point.
But Holy Flying Spaghetti Monster! Are your package prices ever cheap! We pay over $12 for Regional (our own province and the two one each side) much more for National. And there are special rates for Isolated Communities (which makes the price of shipping food to Arctic communities shockingly high).
Even if you knock off 25% for the currency exchange.

I think it may have two reasons: First, The whole California Prop 65 warning that eBay wants sellers to fill out. EVERYTHING IS BELIEVED IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA TO CAUSE CANCER OR KILL YOU SOMEHOW OR SOMEWAY WITH IMPROPER OR PROPER USE. IF YOU LIVE IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA, YOU'RE ***bleep***!!!
Second, I believe that the shipping cost to California is pretty expensive when you live east of the Mississippi, but so is shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, Montana, Idaho, Washing, and Oregon.
It may be like some have said on here, that they may believe that the seller has to pay the Cali sales tax, it may be that some people just don't like California, who knows.

Still, not too far off. When I ship a First Class package to Cali, weighing 6oz, it costs me $3.63. So when the rates go up, my shipping costs will go up also. When I have to pay more for shipping, my prices will go up. It's a never ending beast that will slowly grow to the point that the only way to ship will be to have everything set up as calculated shipping, and those on the both coasts will not be able to buy items from either side of the US.

I've always wanted to pick a state at random, say Idaho.
NOTICE: I WILL NOT SHIP TO IDAHO!
You don't have to worry about that, hardly anyone lives in Idaho, and those few souls that do, probably can care less about buying on eBay.

I actually shipped 22 packages to Idaho in 2018. I shipped 563 to California. and yes, I'm a bit obsessive about that. I keep track of how many I ship to each state. It's fun to know.

It is against the law to ship some automotive parts to addresses in California. As you stated, the Seller would be required to cancel the order and refund the Buyer in full, but they would still have to pay the PayPal fees.
You could risk shipping restricted items, but then potentially face a huge fine from the State of California. I agree that eBay needs to look into giving Sellers the technology to restrict shipping certain items to certain states. What is legal to ship from Maryland to Mississippi, may not be legal to ship to California or PR.

May the Prop 65 silliness. Not worth it to a lot of folks to deal with all the nonsense surrounding that gem.

I would like to sell to California in bulk so that they have enough stuff to make them hesitate before pulling up stakes and moving to Texas. Can't blame them for wanting to live here with all their taxes and natural disasters!

May I ask why you do this? You give up so much money over time? Especially on all those items that you aren't shipping just plain First Class.
