Hi. I shipped a package to NY city (from Chicago). The package is in Mephis right now - I have no idea why there. Ok, I could say it's USPS mistake, but it's the next time when my package went to Memphis. What's going on with this Memphis? USPS mistake or I heard that they ship by plane all packages to Memphis and later they deliver it to destination cities.
Anyway, the package should be in NY right now, not there.

Memphis NDC is one of the distribution hubs/centers.
Although this is explainable, it could have been re-routed wrong, which would add 1-2 days to the transit time.
If so, you will see "misrouted" in the description, otw, it will proceed as normal.

I think someone shipped a package by mistake with Fedex -it's their main distribution center. But it's next time when they did it "by mistake" and the package should never be there. Few of my packages to Florida or Georgia went through Memphis lately and I wonder why. I understand that they could ship it to the wrong distribution center (it happens, of course), just I don't get why the wrong distribution center is always in... Memphis, in my case.
I think that someone in Memhpis has to love me very much 🙂 Or they play in fedex.

I hear ya! I shipped a package from Virginia (right outside Washington DC) and had it go to Maryland (next state over 30 minutes away) by way of TEXAS (half way across the country). Worse, it not only went on vacation and took an extra week but sat at the buyers PO for THREE WEEKS before finally getting on a truck and being delivered to her house. Go figure!

Memphis needs the business to avoid layoffs of personnel.

I just thought so :). It's a sign for me to move there out.
I was sure that they opened a new, huge distribution center in Memhpis and some of packeges goes there first, because it happens too often, but nope. They messed up again. Just the package should arrive this week to NY, but I think it's impossible right now. And my customer is not very patient.
I would have to think about shipping via UPS.

If you have access to the tracking data, you also have access to the carrier being used. The first thing that came to my mind is that the seller might have used FedEx's SmartPost service, in which they handle everything until the last mile, at which point USPS takes the package and delivers it to the addressee. It's an economy service, and all of that might explain the detour to Memphis.
Just blue sky-ing.

Smartpost needs to just go away.

UPS has issues with delivery also, especially at Holiday time in December. Every year UPS drops my packages off at a house a block over. The house a block over has same house nbr and street name as mine but I live on LANE, and neighbor lives on DRIVE. When they use new or temporary drivers this happens a lot.
USPS doe the same thing at Holiday time. My packages are in my neighbors postal box, and mine are in his. Last season this happened everyday for a week! I had to call the PO and speak with a manager about this, and the lack of scanning packages to be picked up!

I have this same issue from time to time with the USPS. I'll mail something from Texas to California, then the tracking number shows the package is in Maine or somewhere like that 2 days later, then it gets rerouted to California with a big delay. Don't know if the post office hires temp workers who just randomly throw packages in whatever mail sorting bin that is closest to them instead of the correct one that is further away, just as long as they appear to be "working", but that might be what happened. This gets worse during late November to December, the holidays. I am terrified of using the USPS during that time because my packages end up circulating all over the country. I'll use FedEx or UPS during the holidays, and I rarely ever use USPS for anything that sells for over $100 bucks in general. Anyway I wouldn't worry if I were you, it will turn up in New York but with a delay.

I don't worry. I always track my packages so I know it happens very often 🙂 Package to TX was in NY. Package to CO was in KY. Just I'm surprised about Memphis - because last week my other package was in Memphis too. And before, and before... few times. It's funny, because I had only one customer from TN (and not from Memphis!). So this is why a question about sorting center there. It looks that there is nothing similar to fedex distribution center so there is one explanation: my packages like visiting Mephis during a transit 🙂
I use UPS at work and there is no problem with them. In Christmas time they are little slower, but still like them the most.
