Why is my package hopping to different facilities??

I ordered a book on June 22nd, and it shipped from Saint Paul, MN the next day. It was expected to be to me (in the Detroit, MI area) by the 29th, but a week after it shipped it ended up in the infamous 84198 zip code which turned out to be a USPS facility in Utah. The next day, it was confirmed to have arrived to the processing center in Provo, UT, and it was back in transit the day after. The last update I got on my package was that it processed through the Denver USPS facility the night of 4th of July.

Any idea as to why in the world this would be happening?? This has never happened to me before 😅 Hopefully it didn’t get on the wrong truck or something like that.

Think of it as taking a drive. I'd be pleased just to see movement during this pandemic. Relax and keep the faith!

@cheriegloss

Book could be coming "media mail". That takes a different ride than 1st Class, or Priority. (yours appears to be taking an unexpected scenic route)

At this point where it is is the least of your worries.

Your area of Michigan is now, going on over 2 months, a USPS "black hole".  Understaffed facilities, with processing of many items being shifted to other areas.

I have a package that made it to Allen Park last month, and has stalled, possibly never to be seen again.

As a matter of fact it is Media Mail.
And I’m so sorry to hear about your package. Did you ever try to call USPS about it?

Re: Why is my package hopping to different facilities??

It's due to under staffing at USPS. My packages are also taking scenic routes the past several months. I have many regular customers so they are more understanding, otherwise I'd be in trouble. I recently purchased an item which arrived very quickly but the tracking showed it is still in route. I left the seller positive FB and later wrote them that I was very pleased with the item so they wouldn't be too concerned about not getting the package delivered scan.

Re: Why is my package hopping to different facilities??

All Detroit processing facilities have had less than 10% of the USPS employees showing up for work. This has been going on for the past several months.  They are milking the leave system basically. I am a retired Postmaster and hear weekly from active Postmasters and managers about the mess the Detroit employees are causing for the whole country. I had 18 months of sick leave built up when I retired. I got nothing in return for it so I always wondered who the stupid one is. Then I looked in a mirror. Open up a ticket online for where's my item and that normally gets your item moving. Do NOT allow the ticket to be closed prematurely as I understand some managers are doing just that as they feel helpless to do anything else. Write your Congressperson. Most are involved to get this fixed. Good luck and I am sorry for your mail problems.

Re: Why is my package hopping to different facilities??

Media Mail is taking about a month due to COVID.  Michigan is especially hard hit.  You might be able to speed the process up by going to the USPS website and tracking there and then initiating a lost package search, that can give it a little kick.

Thanks for your concern. Buyer will be more disappoint than I.  It's only $$, and a ding on my eBay account . I expect that as they paid for it, that it is something that they wanted to have😐 I don't have a replacement to send them.

Did not waste my time with a call to the USPS.  Been there, done that. (don't have the t shirt) Not much different than talking to eBay.

I did do a missing mail report. Got the typical automated response. In 30 days I will get another automated response. Then in another 30 days I will get an automated response. All will say sorry, we are looking. After a while I will get an automated response telling me the report is closed even if the item ends up getting delivered. Have had that happen a half dozen times. There seems to be no link between the reports, and the actual tracking system. just automated responses that eventually end. They will suggest that I use a "packing slip" in the package in the future. (I always do that)

I hope that your book arrives. Just think of all the stories it will have to tell you about the great travels that it had for minimal USPS charges😁

Re: Why is my package hopping to different facilities??

Interestingly, this happened to me several times even before the current virus situation.  I took the advice of others here and just sat tight and the item eventually got to me later.  You do know that you have the MBG if it does not reach you at all, but I think you are wise to allow somewhat more time, because it IS traveling, although randomly.

Re: Why is my package hopping to different facilities??

I'm in Florida and I ordered some books a couple of years ago from a Florida seller who lived about 200 miles from me, if even that distance. The package took the scenic route from Florida to California, then finally back to Florida. I at least got the package, eventually.

Recently a Parcel Select package I shipped to Nevada took nearly a month to get there, after ending up in Puerto Rico at one point. Considering it wasn't supposed to go by air, it was quite a feat to get it to Nevada in one day from Puerto Rico. Speed boat?

Sometimes there seems to be no rhyme or reason.

Re: Why is my package hopping to different facilities??

I shipped an item 6/15/2020 and it still has a status of "in transit to next facility" with no movement! I have opened 2 cases and they closed them the next day, but sent me an email that is "technically" still open. But there is no movement in the tracking. Is this "technically" statement a lie?

Re: Why is my package hopping to different facilities??

Michigan USPS is the worst in the country.

It's very common to have late and missing packages.

Detroit holds packages up to ten days.

I've had more late and missing packages in the past month, then I've had in 8 years.

Re: Why is my package hopping to different facilities??

As of last Saturday it’s back “in transit” and god knows where it’s going. Hopefully to my hometown post office and not out of state.

USPS is seriously pissing me off right now. I should have had this cookbook a long time ago.
