Why can't I sell something large and offer both freight & local pickup on eBay motors?

First off, not a vehicle.

Large diagnostic tool.  Weights 600 lbs, 5 ft tall and freight cost varies dramatically depending on where it's going.

If I list it on eBay motors and select freight, it takes away my ability to offer free local pickup.  Fixed price shipping could be a bad deal for seller or buyer depending on distance and whether they have a loading dock or not.  This makes no sense.  Why?

Since not a vehicle, why not list it on regular ebay where you have the options you want?

Suppose a buyer buys it, has it shipped and files a not as described case?  You could be out a lot of shipping money.  Listings of non vehicles in motors does not protect you from that.  I would make it pick up only to avoid such a pitfall.

Especially a diagnostic tool. Best to have them test it when picked up(and get cash), or you could be taking a drive to get it as a return. Even if it's picked up, and not able to be tested, and it doesn't work as advertised, the buyer can open an INAD.

...Because its a vehicle related engine diagnostic tool?  "why don't you work around our broken and buggy website and its multitude of issues and put your item in a less relevant category instead" isn't exactly a stellar solution to the problem I described.

@simba6 Listing it under "business and industrial" doesn't offer any different seller protections from an INAD item complaint.  Refusing to ship it will limit my potential buyers and so will refusing to allow local pickup on the item.  These two should not be mutually exclusive.

The bigger issue is you getting cheated, ripped off or this costing you a whole lot of money for  nothing.

Any idiot can make up any excuse and you will have to pay to have it shipped back to you-THAT IS THE FEAR.  eBay will not support you, they will not help you except to help the buyer to the money.

Depending on who makes it and what it is, this could be significant money.  Why ask for trouble?

@divwido  I've shipped well over $100k worth of used industrial equipment freight, making sales both on and off eBay, and not a single INAD complaint to speak of.

Listing this machine in the business and industrial category would let me offer both local pickup and freight options to prospective buyers.  "just don't offer shipping" is not a solution and severely limits potential buyers.

I can't even find a B&I category that allows both freight and pickup.  What one are you looking at?

If there is one, what about making that the main category and add a second category from ebay motors?  Wonder if that might be away around this.

Unless there has been a very recent drastic change, listings in the B&I category do not offer the protection of the MBG.  (Someone will jump in and correct me if I am in error).
