Why am I forced into a return?

New ebay seller here.

I recently sold an item marked as "Seller does not accept returns".     This morning I received a message from ebay that the buyer has requested a return because the item "Doesn't match description or photos" and "Item had smell to it. Not in new condition"   Obviously I believe the description was correct and did not notice any "smell" when the item was sent.   Ebay lists my only options as Accept the return (I pay for shipping), Offer another item, or Give a refund.  Why is there no option to deny the return?   Do I have any options here?

You can't deny a return if the item isn't as described.  Even if you listed the item as no returns.  Essentially the buyer is saying you didn't fulfill your side of the bargain, so they get to send it back.  Just accept the return, and when you get it back issue a refund.  Any other course is going to lead to you being out the item and money.

I am sorry this happened to you.

Many sellers (new and seasoned) believe their no return policy means no refunds. Unfortunately the money back guarantee overrides this. There is actually a 4th option. If ebay has to step in to resolve this issue, you will be forced to refund and the buyer most likely be allowed to keep the item. Ebay will then add a defect to your account.

Only you can decide if the item is worth purchasing a shipping label for a return.

Good luck.

There are no options for sellers. Buyers can open a return for any reason. First they freeze the Pay Pal transaction. Then they take money out of your account to pay for a return label. It does not matter if the buyer sends a empty box back to you. If you do not refund the buyer ebay will take the money out of your account and refund the buyer. If it is not a high dollar item forget about it. There is a appeal process but you will waste a endless amount of time trying to fight ebay policy regarding returns. They don't tell you about this when you join. Returns are set up for the buyer and if they want to abuse the policy the sellers are the ones who are screwed. Welcome to eBay and the greedy money back policy.

"Why am I forced into a return?"

You're not forced into a return... you're forced into a refund. As posted earlier, No Returns does NOT mean no refunds... 'No Returns' simply means you don't ever want to see your item again.

Smells are not part of the MBG and since the item is otherwise described the buyer should not be able to return it.

Ebay will not enforce their own policy though.

So your option is to refund or refund upon return.
