Where do you find the Default "Add Custom Text of Shipping Label" area?

As of today, July 19th , 2019:
Where is the default information kept on you Ebay "Add custom text on label".
I set my info up years ago on Selling Manager, and I had it default to a part number I use to use.
Now that part number is replaced by a new one.
Just to make sure, Yes, I know I can wipe the info out and type in whatever info I want, but I want it to
default to it automatically like it currently does.  I don't want to have to type in info on each item I sell.
Attached is the block I'm talking about.  Anytime I print a label this number automatically populated.  I am not typing the info in.
I was on the phone with Ebay for 3 hours and no one knows where the information is located.

It populates with the eBay item number, and I doubt there is any option to choose what goes there.

Are you saying up until recently the new label flow was still suing your part numbers there instead of the eBay item number?

(if so, you must have had a legacy setting that is no longer observed - they probably changed it when they rolled out version 3 or 4 or whatever it is of the new label flow)

To set it up, you need to go through a rats maze ... I mean ... you need to do it through the "Print Labels in Bulk" experience.

  1. While in the "Print Single Label" experience, there is a link at the top of the page that you need to click on:  Print labels in bulk
  2. Under the insurance column, there will be an "edit" link.  Click on that.
  3. Make sure you are on the "Label Options" tab, and at the bottom you will see a multi-selection option by the "Add text on label".
  4. That should give you the 5 options that I think you are expecting ... you probably want "custom".
  5. I'm pretty sure that eBay will remember the option that you select if you apply it to all labels, and then eBay will display this for future labels

Re: Where do you find the Default "Add Custom Text of Shipping Label" area?

I stand corrected (and abashed - just the type of arcane workaround I gravitate towards 🙂

The "rat's maze" does APPEAR it might provide some access to the "add custom text on label"  field on the new label flow labels, but as you said, it is unknown if sticky (I don't do bulk and have no current orders to ship so can't test).

Why that functionality isn't available in the single label new label flow is unknown (actually that's not true - we know why - because the rollout is a relative train wreck), but that bulk editing option needs some work.

What does the "No" option mean? It looks like it is the "uncheck the box and display no custom field on the label" option and needs to be relabeled to make that more obvious. Like maybe "None". brian@ebay

I am now unclear from re-reading the OP if OP means to use some static part number, or is referring to some variable part number that was pulled from somewhere (custom sku/label/etc fields in SMP?) in the past and populated the field. However, if a static part number then the "custom" option looks like it might do the trick if it does "take" and is sticky.

I have my doubts it is sticky because those settings are a per label setting. What if label A is edited to display a SKU, label B is edited to display the item number, and label C is edited to display a custom text entry? Which takes precedence and becomes the sticky? I fear it is going to default back to "item number" and may not be sticky. Need input from peoples to determine.

Hi @berserkerplanet, I'm not sure on this one so I'm going to reach out to the shipping team to find out. When I have more info I'll come back to this thread. Thanks!

Re: Where do you find the Default "Add Custom Text of Shipping Label" area?

For years, my shipping labels have been printing the Item Number down the right side of my shipping labels.

I have recently been opted into the new bulk shipping label flow.  I printed 2 labels this morning, and neither one of them printed the Item Number where I expected them to.  I need to print 2 labels tomorrow, so I will double check before printing.

I also need to double check where I can select which zip code I am shipping from.  All of my post offices start with 928 for the zip, but I would like to be able to select the correct one so they get credit for my packages.

That should be the Item ID choice shown in the screenshot above.

Pretty sure that would be set and defined by the "ship from" address in the new single label flow (I have no unshipped orders so can't look at anything in the bulk flow to see if there are options there)

https://community.ebay.com/t5/Selling/Ebay-needs-to-fix-its-shipping-label-generator/m-p/29606637/hi...

The new label flow has changed since then, but idea is the same. See the screen shot in the OP in this thread. Use the "edit" link under the "Ship From/Return To" address in the upper left of the single new label flow to change the address (I think the changes "stick" even if you don't create that label.)

If you look at the screenshot in the OP above, it shows a single Ship From/ Return To address - that is the zip code that will be used for labels in the new label single flow, and I'm speculating also in the bulk flow.

You would need to edit it, and tick the "my ship from and return address are different" box, select you address as the return address, and enter the address of the PO you want to use as the ship from address (the full address of the accepting facility is now required by USPS - not just the zip. That means you have to add PO addresses to your eBay addresses. Which isn't a huge deal  just annoying)

Again, I can't look in the bulk flow at this point, and am just assuming the new label single and bulk flows share settings.
