What to Do About Lost USPS Package w/ Signature Confirmation

My son sold an item and it shows it was delivered to buyer. Since it was several hundred dollars he had also added signature confirmation. It was signed for by someone (with only initials), but buyer claims they don't know anyone with those initials and they never got it. Now they're being a pain about filing an insurance claim.
Can an insurance claim even be filed for an item that has a signature confirmation? Should the buyer file a missing mail claim? Should my son just ignore the half a dozen messages they have sent and wait for them to file an INR report? My son's trying to be diplomatic about it (just in case they're being honest, hah), but the buyer's messages don't add up and my son is tired of dealing with them. Thanks for the input!

I wonder if the mailman initialed the pkg? My postman has been doing that since Covid, FedEx has done it here too with my deliveries.Yes, definitely wait for them to file an inr..you should be covered. You cant file a missing pkg since it shows delivered.

If tracking shows it was delivered, he should win that case.  However, case can still be filed with the payment service used and the credit card company if it was paid by card.   You could try the 800 number on the USPS web site. They can pull up more info than what is on line.

It wasn't lost; it was delivered. I would stop responding, unless or until the buyer files an Item Not Received dispute, at which point you would upload your tracking number and that should resolve things. While some kind of signature is supposed to be made at delivery time, it doesn't have to be (1) legible, or (2) that of the addressee himself. Signature Confirmation only requires any adult at that address to sign for it, and the carrier can do it himself if circumstances require. (Usually they will also note "Covid" in the address field if they do their own initialing, but not always.)

You wait and hope they file an INR case and then enter the tracking number into the case and the case will rule in your favor.

You also hope they don't come back with a Item is Not as Described return case.  In that event, accept the return and make sure eBay or your son provides a prepaid return shipping label and then you wait until the buyer sends the item back before refunding.

Come back here with any questions.
