If you ship banana's   a box about 10" X 4" X 4"   will afford good protection as

you can use plenty of filler to surround the Banana.

If you're selling  Piano's,    You'll need a much larger box.

Ditto if you are offering Elephants.     But personally,    I'd probably use local pick-up for Elephants.

None of those 3 items will fit into an envelope.     Just won't work no matter how hard you try.

Don't stock up yet.  You are going to be very limited in what and how much you can sell.  I'd grab-depending on inventory-a couple 6x6x6, 8x8x8, 10x10x6, and grab a couple free flat rate Priority Boxes.  That should get you started.  You will have to use your best judgement on envelopes.

We can't really help you much without knowing what kind of items you are hoping to sell.

By and large - the least expensive boxes are the ones you can order through the USPS for free, but they have to use Priority shipping - so if your items are less than  1lb, you are paying more for shipping than necessary. The bulk of my stuff is shipped either through a USPS priority box (there are many, many sizes you can order - either a flat rate box - the infamous "if it fits, it ships" to a certain weight - or priority boxes that the postage is based on the actual weight of the packaged item. Otherwise I'm using a padded tyvex envelope for the first class eligible items. Price-wise, you've got to google who has got the best price on the day you're ordering. I used ot pay less than $0.50 per envelope, but unless I am buying large quantity - it's hard to find for a super cheap price these days.

Depends on what your shipping.  For small buy heavy items like tools. The flat rate boxes can save money.  They are not all that big but for wrenches they are lower cost way to ship.  Envelopes don't offer much protection and should be avoided if the item can be damaged or tear through and get lost.

Completely depends on what you are shipping and how well you package. Boxes add weight. I ship stuff all the time in padded envelopes, both the USPS flat rate variety and ones I purchase myself for first class items. If it is something that I think can't take some bumps I either put it in a box or I wrap the item in bubble wrap before putting it in the envelope. Knock on wood, I've had no damage claims.

I use the tyvex plastic exterior ones - not a paper exterior that is prone to tearing - and ALWAYS ones with the built in bubble padding.

Unless/until the OP comes back and specifies what they are planning to sell/ship, we really can't advise the best method to ship and the best location to get that packaging from.

Boxes offer better protection than envelopes.   But to answer your question it depends on what is being shipped.  As a rule a box is better and if it won't add to the shipping cost, use it over an envelope.

This question was posted 6 months ago, and currently the OP has no active or Completed listings. I hope they didn't overstock on shipping supplies.

@nobody*s_perfect , @simba6 , @mastermindf_80 , @glgenterprise

And that is why when these "general" type questions are asked I ask one or more in return ... like I did on this thread, "What do you plan to sell?"

And of course THAT question was never answered and all they did was post in March with another "general" comment tagged to nobody ... "This platform is really helpful. Thanks for your reply."

This is the kind of stuff that should be deleted like yesterday so we don't get the venue all clogged up with useless threads ...

Like 10 separate questions with the words "Can't pay"  on the front page of the payments board?

And 5 more on the second page.

that payment board is no fun to read

I never heard of so many ebayers having a hard time paying.

I happen to pay the same way I always do,with a credit card and the pay now button, works like a charm
