I don't feel I can sell my game if I have to charge the buyer the post office rates for a flat rate and perhaps it may be more feasible to wrap it in brown paper or make my own box from recycled free boxes that get flattened at local stores, plus I'm helping the environment by saving the landfills. Any thoughts?

Just wrapping the original game box in paper isn't enough protection. It needs an outer box. If you don't have one handy, then you can make one by wrapping corrugated cardboard around the box.
The USPS Large flat rate box which they call the board game box is probably not a good choice because regular Priority Mail rates based on package weight and dimensions will be cheaper unless it's a really heavy game and/or going to a far Zone.
FYI, USPS now has a $4 surcharge which applies to packages over 22 inches long (but not to the flat rate box) so try to stay under that if possible.

Get a free Priority Mail board game box.
USPS says not to wrap boxes in paper as paper gets torn and stuck in the machinery.

That box is a Large flat rate box, so the postage cost would probably more than the regular Priority Mail rate based on weight and distance. Current online price for that box is $19.20, but you can ship 3 pounds to Zone 8 for $17.74.
Also, the box has been discontinued and can no longer be ordered through usps.com.
