Hello,
I've had a month of frustration with the USPS regarding them losing my package. Last month, I bought a phone through Ebay and the buying process was smooth, phone came to me ahead of the scheduled delivery. However, I found a better deal on an upgraded version of the phone I bought, so I decided to return the phone.
The return process on Ebay was simple, with Ebay providing their own USPS shipping label back to the seller. I sent it, tracking number picked it up and USPS sent it back to the seller's area. However, the package was later lost in the mail. I had USPS do a missing mail case and after a month they confirmed that it was irretrievably lost, and because there was no extra insurance on the label, I can't even file a claim through USPS.
Is there anything Ebay can do on their end regarding this? I've been in regular contact with the seller regarding this and we're both not sure what to do. If I knew Ebay's own shipping label didn't have added insurance to it, I would have just shipped it myself through my own method. This whole month has been frustrating with the lack of action by the USPS local post office and this result.
Thank you.

Unfortunately there's not much you can do.

Ebay may have provided the return label, but they didn't actually pay for the postage. That would've either been charged to you, as in, taken out of your Paypal account, or charged to the seller by adding it to their monthly invoice. With it being a buyers' remorse return, it will usually be the buyer that pays for return shipping, but some sellers do offer free returns no matter what the reason. I'm guessing that whoever paid for the return shipping will be the one that takes the loss on this.

What does tracking actually say?
Out For Delivery, perhaps, and then Status Not Updated?

I already filed a "Missing Mail case" with USPS, to which they investigated and stated that it was 'irretrievably lost.'
Then most likely your return was delivered to your seller:
Out For Delivery ... Status Not Updated --
usually means that the carrier forgot to scan Delivered.

Where do you find the label eBay is supposed to send for return item not as described. Told seller I requested label to be emailed to me but was never received. Seller told me not to purchase my own label as eBay had charged them. Seller then asked eBay to close case as item not received in time and eBay determined in favor of seller. Now I have two items with little value as items were second quality. I had previously asked seller for photo of bottom of item which was not in original listing. They sent one photo of bottom but now I know it’s not the same as the item received.

There’s no label for you to find if the cases are closed. One is Issued to you if the return is approved & it’s a domestic transactions. The label, once issued, is available within your return request—eBay notifies you.
