Is it me or did usps shipping almost double (for larger packages) I've stuck with USPS since the pickup is free for a long time. But as of the last few weeks I've been getting nasty messages about high shipping fee quotes. Of course I look at the difference and see what usps charges for a package is near double FedEx. I have read price increase is coming Jan 1 and other tidbits in and on line but they never really effected me however it seems the prices have made a monumental jump here in the last couple of weeks ...
Signed. Concerned, upset, mad, frustrated, and in shock seller... cheers

Usually each year the new USPS rates and policies go into effect in January. This year, one new policy got delayed until June 23. Before then, USPS charged a "dimensional weight" for Priority Mail packages that were over 1 cubic foot (1728 cubic inches) if they were going to Zones 5 - 9. There are 3 changes that went into effect in June:
1. Dimensional weight now applies to all zones, not just 5 - 9.
2. Dimensional weight now applies to Parcel Select Ground as well as to Priority Mail.
3. The divisor, formerly 194, is now 166.
So yes indeed there would have been a huge increase in the postage costs for your larger packages if they were over that size threshold.

Just a hint - when dealing with oversized packages going to zones 5-9, I have found it to be often, not always, less expensive to use Retail Ground postage, purchased over the counter at the Post Office than to use Parcel Select dimensional weight.

The base price for FedEx may be cheaper but there are a myriad of surcharges FedEx may tack on along the way.

I don't even think this is a complete list. My new laptop came out of the box with a wonky screen. The warrantee department sent a special box with prepaid FedEx label to send it back for replacement. FedEx demanded $11.45 just to pick-up the package from my home.
