I ordered a CD from a large ebay store. I discovered it wasn't the right version that I wanted. So I started the return process. At the end, I was issued a refund and told not to return the item. I was fully expexting to have to send it back. Should I try to send the item back? If so, how? I don't want to send a item to store without them knowing what it is, but I want to do the right thing, but maybe because they are a large store they don't want it back? Please tell me how to proceed. The ebay case says that it is closed.

You don't need to ship it back.
Seller has 3 business days to respond to a return.
Some just refund.
Some say return for refund.
Some fail to respond so eBay decides for them.
Seller might've also set up to automatically refund if item is less than xx dollars.
It also depends on the type of return you opened. Was it your fault or their fault that the version wasn't correct? If it was the seller's fault, they would've been required to pay return shipping and that expense might've outweiged the value of the item.

Sometimes, it costs more to ship an item back (and to process the returned item) than the item is actually worth. From a seller's perspective, it can be more cost effective to just tell the customer to keep the item.
So, if the messages you received say not to send it back, then you don't have to ... use it, gift it, sell it, or throw it away.
Sounds great, right? Is there a downside for the buyer? Perhaps .... returns are very costly for a business, and if a customer abuses returns or requests too many returns then this may be acted upon. A seller may decide that they do not want to sell to you any longer, and they will block you. For example, my business will no longer sell to any customer that has two returns ... and if the customer is dishonest about the return reason in order to avoid return shipping fees, then my business will no longer sell to that customer AND report the customer to eBay for returns abuse.

Thanks for the replies. I just checked off "Item didn't fit" and made the comment. "Ordered the wrong version. Sorry for the inconvience." Then all of a sudden I was taken to the refund page and told not to send it back. The item was only around $16 and the store was very large with over a million items for sale so maybe it is like you said, they don't take items back under a certain amount? I just wanted to make sure. Thank you both.

Just out of curiosity...
why did you select that option instead of the option "ordered by mistake"?

To answer your question. There were two versions of this particular CD, which I did not realize at first. On the version I ordered the songs are not seperate tracks, it's just one mix. I wanted a CD with seperate tracks. So after doing little research. I had planned to return this one and then get the other edition from somewhere else. I didn't say "ordered by mistake" because I fully indended to order it, but did not discover what had happped until I tried to play it. So I gave the reason I gave because this version did not "fit" my needs, so to speak. Likely this particular seller doesn't deal with returns under a certain amount like posters mentioned above, so I have nothing to worry about hopefully. Thanks to everyone who replied.
