It's seems many buyers want this. A few buyers have this weird back/forth with me. They ask about tracking/shipping status and I give it to them along with the direct link to the USPS tracking page for that package and tell them they can either click on there anytime or on the tracking number within their ebay purchase for latest known updates. They thank me.
Yet I still get messages coming back from these buyers asking me again for a tracking update status. I check, copy/paste the new updates and show that tracking page link again. They thank me. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Because you know... it's much easier to click reply to a seller's message and type out your question asking for status, sending the message, and waiting a day or so for a reply rather than just clicking the tracking number within your Purchase history (or on the link that I pasted them) that shows your latest status instantly.
I have a buyer going on 4 updates from me so far. Lol. Guess he's lonely

Been there, done that.

It may be that they are not comfortable looking up tracking. My mother-in-law will call USPS to get tracking updates every day even thou I have sent her the tracking number as a clickable link with directions to just click the number. She reads the number to them from my e-mail.

Possible. Or maybe I make it too comfortable for buyers to message me 🙂
At least your mother-in-law knows of the effort. That's rare amongst buyers these days. I wish my buyers could be more like your MIL and call USPS for the tracking updates.

Some buyers just need some extra hand holding. You may be correct that he is lonely. There are a lot of people just craving interaction right now. I have had a couple of those in the last few months, I think they just did not have anything else to keep them busy.

Reply to them once with the method, then not again. If they keep eMailing, just have a 1 sentence reply telling them to go back to the first eMail you sent. If they have any other questions, contact their local post office and inquire about the package there. I put in my listings that I do not run the USPS network so anything that happens after the package leaves the trunk of my car at the post office is not my responsibility.
