Should I close this return request yet?

I received a different model of an item from a seller in china and after sending pics and many messages the seller offered to refund 50% and keep it. They said the refund would be processed within 48 hours but it was now the 30th day of my MBG clock. So at 11pm the refund was not still not processed yet, I then opened the return request to continue my protection. Then within a few hours after opening return the 50% refund was processed. I purchase this item using my debit card directly through ebay checkout so I can't see the actual transaction on my paypal account, but based on my new order total in ebay's purchase history the 50% of item price was sent but I did not receive any of the sales tax portion. After chatting with ebay they told me the seller has to refund the tax portion too and I need to contact seller for it. I thought this was strange since anywhere else I shop the sales tax is added automatically to refunds , the same as when you make a purchase. So I went ahead and contacted seller again as per ebay and told them they need to refund 50% of the tax total too. After I received a partial refund offer now for half the sales tax. If I accept the tax refund now it says the case will close automatically. Again since I used debit card I can't see the original refund and it is not back on my card yet either. It could possibly be pending which means seller could still cancel it at paypal once the case is closed too. Is there anyway to see these paypal transactions done through ebay directly? Should I accept the tax portion and close the claim now or wait until I receive the first refund back on my card? I know with ebay you have to plan for the unexpected, or am I being too paranoid.

And on second thought, how on earth did ebay develop a refund process that doesn't refund the sales tax portion automatically? For a company that was so against collecting sales tax sure does make the process complex for refunding it.

The CS rep (the fool, or improperly educated; employee you talked to.) was wrong.

Ebay has to refund the tax since they are the one who get it for the states collecting it.

Contact eBay about this again and push until you find a person who knows all of this.

A china dealer and you got a refund. Be glad: very glad. You found a semi honest user in china.

Return shipping is unbelievable high cost compared to what it cost to ship to the US.

The semi is due to you did not get what you ordered, typical scam from China sellers.

Never purchase from China unless you can afford to lose the money you are spending.

Check your credit card online to see if you were refunded of course.

Leave the case open until you are see the refund.

Nothing has been refunded to my debit card yet and no sales tax refund from ebay. I will try speaking to another ebay agent to clarify who owes me that portion and when will I receive it. I don't usually buy from china much but it seemed most sellers of this item were based there. I will leave the claim open for now until I see it appear on my card although the seller is asking me to close it since they processed the refund. Where does ebay hide the transaction details when I use my debit card at checkout instead of using my regular paypal account? I can't see any refunds, the only way I know is that my order total changed in my purchase history.

Your "50%" refund from your seller included an automatic eBay refund of your sales tax. If your local sales tax rate is 10% for example and your "50%" refund was $66, eBay put $6 in, and your seller only refunded $60.

How this works: Your seller filled in a single box labeled Total refund amount. Say your item was $132 plus sales tax. But your seller only entered 50% of $132 i.e. $66, ignoring that the box says Total refund amount. So eBay calculates 10% sales tax of $66 and refunds $6, your seller refunded $66 minus the $6 sales tax, and you received a $66 total refund amount, which includes sales tax.

Now your seller has responded to the partial refund offer with the e.g. $6 still owed. You have until the end of 21 business days, i.e. at least 29 calendar days, from the start of the return request, to accept or decline the partial refund offer.

So wait for the for-example $66 to return to your debit card within those 29 days, then to close the case, accept the partial refund before it expires.

To see some details of your refund,  click More Action next to your item on this page and open the Order Details page.
