Shipping from US to Canada First Class... different rates charged to us and customer?

Ran into this just now... my wife sold an item weighing 5 oz to Canada. The buyer paid $5.03 for USPS First Class Int'l. When I do the shipping, the item actually weighs 2 oz and the cost to us is $11.05 for First Class Int'l to Canada.

So why do we need to foot the $6.00 difference for the shipping?

We have free domestic shipping, but even if that was the difference in shipping costs, it doesn't cost $6.00 for First Class on a 2 oz package for here in the US.

Canada is international shipping, so the rate of course will be higher than for domestic mail.

There are 3 types of First Class mail: letters, flats (AKA Large envelope), and package.  You charged your buyer for a Large Envelope, not for a package.  eBay only sells postage for packages.  There are very strict limits on what can be mailed as a flat (basically, only documents) so this time you'll have to absorb the postage difference, and next time you'll set up your listing with "package/thick envelope" selected from the menu for package type.

Here's the official USPS rates publication, where you can see the prices for various categories of postage:

What is the item number?

Your listings on this account all have "free shipping" except for one listing.

It's actually my wife's account (fromthentonow). Free DOMESTIC shipping, not free to Canada. Item 254744796026
