I have sold an object and the buyer paid for economy USPS shipping but requested UPS or FedEx that cost $5 more without paying for it. I contacted the buyer but have received NO response. Am I obliged to pay for the extra amount?

No, you can cancel the sale as "buyer requested" since they're trying to change the terms of the sale. If you're willing to send UPS/FedEx you can relist with that option, otherwise just relist as you had it before for someone else to purchase.

No why would you cancel the sale? Just ship the way you had posted in the listing. Politely reply to the buyer that the item has shipped by the USPS as listed. If there is anything else i can do feel free to contact me. That is what i would do. If you cancel the sale as buyer requested and they file a complaint with ebay you will get a defect against you. Asking you a question about changing shippers is not a valid reason to cancel.

That is the last thing they should do.

The buyer may have USPS delivery issues in their area, or they may have provided a house address for UPS/FedEx when they're rural and use a PO Box for USPS.
Just saying, shipping as advertised can cause issues if the buyer is specifically requesting a different service. Since the buyer is non-responsive, it may be better to cancel and avoid those issues. Buyer can always repurchase if buyer/seller work out the shipping.
Seller will not get a defect if buyer complains to eBay. Buyer is the one trying to change terms of sale. CS has told me on numerous occasions that's just cause to use buyer requested cancel.

If the buyer has not paid yet you can send them a Invoice. With the Invoice you can add the Shipping Service they request.
