Shipping Charges

I'm just getting back into selling after many years as a buyer only. I have followed all eBay directions and have had several successful sales. I do not use eBay labels and have my auctions set at 7 days with free shipping. I am selling mostly small collectibles and books. My problem come when I'm listing. For most of my items, I get the option for using USPS First Class shipping. On other auctions for similar items I only get the USPS option for expedited shipping. I've tried to get help from eBay chat, and three different people gave me different things to try that didn't work.  Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Shipping Charges

Yes, if you put you don't know, that will affect your shipping. In order to get that First Class option on eBay shipping, the item has to be less than 16 ounces. If you put in the item weighs 8 ounces and once you box it up you realize it really weighs 12 ounces, you can change the weight and size later to mail it correctly, but you will only get the payment from the buyer based on what you enter in the weight and size area when you list the items. The price changes every 4 ounces for first class and every pound for priority mail.

Re: Shipping Charges

Depends on the weight & measures of the package.   First Class mail has weight limitations.

Re: Shipping Charges

I have been checking the option where I don't know the package dimensions. Would that affect the shipping?

Re: Shipping Charges

Also, items if similar sizes sometimes list for first class and other times for expedited.

Re: Shipping Charges

Of course, you have to know exact weight & dimensions of package when you list your item.

The eBay shipping calculator defaults to Retail pricing, which has a weight limit of 13 ounces for First Class packages. So if the seller entered a weight over 13 ounces, they would only be shown Priority Mail options.

Re: Shipping Charges

Knowing the weigh of everything you intent to list is critical.  I once sold about 400 Lucy & Me figurines and made sure the weight of each lot was under one pound including all packaging and the label.  I have three scales very close by in my listing / shipping department.  Two are digital scales and one is an old Pelouze model P2 postage spring scale with useless first class rates printed on it.  One ounce was 34¢ at the time I bought that scale but it comes in so handy for setting my S&H rates.

I keep a print out of the USPS first class rate chart along with the domestic flat rate chart close by for quick reference so I have the ebay discount rates in view.

Why would you not print your own labels?  Top rated sellers get great discounts on postage and don't have to stand in line, ever.  At one point I was getting 17% off postage.  Today it seems 11% is typical.  That 11% is what pays for all my purchased supplies.

As far as dimensions go remember that most objects are three dimensional so don't forget to put the depth in your listings.  It is good to take a birds eye view photo while your at it and even a shot of the bottom view helps on many items.

Re: Shipping Charges

I'm sure you know what you are talking about, but it seems to me I am listing items for 15 ounces and got the first class option. Nonetheless, the OP can enter 12 ounces when they list and then soon as the listing is active, go in to the listing and edit it with the correct weight.

Re: Shipping Charges

My comments only apply if you are using eBay shipping for getting your shipping labels. If you are taking your items to the post office to buy the shipping, the cut off for first class is 13 ounces, not 16 ounces.

@candd205

If you are seeing the first class option with 15 oz that means that your shipping preferences are marked to show the buyer the commercial prices.  If you were using the retail rate, you wouldn't see 1st class over 13 ounces.

I'm sure that changing a weight to more than 13 ounces on an active listing would eliminate first class if the seller was using retail rates.
