I had a Buyer bidding on an auction, item was about $ 60. They messaged me advising that if they win they want the item shipped to a different address (and they included the address).
I messaged back that I only ship tot he address on file, otherwise I lose eBay Seller Protection. I advised them they can change their address BEFORE the Auction ends, they did that.
So, when the Auction ended and they won they were rather taken back by the increased cost of Shipping. I checked their City - State on their original message and the one put on the order ... I'm on the east coast and to their REAL address in the middle of the country shipping was about $ 17 but for the other address (west coast) shipping jumped to $ 35.
So this is another good reason to ONLY ship to the address on file ...
I messaged the Buyer and explained WHY they were seeing the different costs AND let them know if they changed their minds just to message me requesting a cancellation. That's what they did but it could have been an expesnive error had I agreed to ship to the "messaged" address ... would have cost the difference between $ 35 & $ 17 ...

Interesting lesson for the purchaser.....You of course already know the rules and regs.....

They could have simply changed the address when they went to pay - no need to change their address in ebay.

Yep, I go ahead and cancel and ask them to repurchase with the correct address. Once they ask in messages to change the address, that is enough to warrant canceling with a problem with the buyer's address, imo, in most cases. I send the buyer a message to that effect after I cancel.
I have in the past changed the address for an inexpensive item after a quick vet of the buyer.

But in this case, they asked BEFORE bidding: " if they win they want the item shipped to a different address (and they included the address)".
So the seller could have advised them that if they win the auction l all they have to do is click on the "Change" link that appears next to their name and address on the payment page.
Also, they can preview the shipping cost to the alternate address by clicking on the "Shipping and payments" tab in the listing, changing the ZIP Code in the shipping cost section.
