I haven't done a return in forever, so here is my question: Do I contact the seller first via ebay messages that I want to return an item and ask him to issue a return label? Or do I go right to filing a return request via ebay?
In case of the first, is it up to the seller how much to refund upon receipt of the return? In other words, can he decide to just refund the item price and not the initial shipping? TIA!!

I always give the seller a chance to make things right. With a opened SNAD case, the seller must refund you 100% including original shipping and pay for return shipping. But I would contact the seller first via eBay messages.

The question is:
Why do you want to return?
All returns should go through the eBay return system. The reason for the return might be a factor on who pays shipping and how much of a return you're entitled to.

Just open a return request. It doesn't count against the seller and following the correct process protects you and allows the seller to recover their eBay fees.

If it a buyers remorse return (for example, you just changed your mind) and the seller accepts returns, I would just open a return without contacting the seller.
If it is a Not as Described return, I would suggest contacting the seller if there is any possible scenario where you could remedy the situation without a return. Otherwise, I don't see the point of contacting seller.

Thanks for all your intput!
Yes, it's definitely a not as described return request... I bought a lot of six magazines and the damage is more extensive than described (separeted covers, staining, missing pages). In his listing, the seller asked to be contacted first, so I'll go ahead and do that, and depending on his response, I'll open a return request via ebay.

Provided the seller cancels the sale (refunds) with any reason other than "out of stock", the seller will receive their FVF and won't get a defect.

Absolutely - "buyer asked to cancel".

Does this mean that the seller can no longer cancel the transaction if the item already shipped, delivered, and now is being returned?
No. You can cancel the transaction after it has been shipped and delivered.

Sounds like another Phising trip, you could just Google Scams and read them through, but yes, you should contact the seller first before you file your SNAD and then demand some outrageous amount as a partial refund and you'll get to keep the item and get some money back. This of course only works if the return shipping is just too prohibitive for the seller and they would lose out by paying for the return trip. If you're going to file a SNAD anyways, there is no need to contact the seller. Just open a return and check the right boxes. The seller doesn't have any recourse with a SNAD, you're in the drivers seat.
