I recently returned an item that I purchased that I found out after the fact was fake. I returned it to the seller per eBays instructions with an explanation in my return that the item was fake. The item was delivered to the seller (with tracking to prove it) and eBay asked the seller to respond. No response. After about a month (maybe slightly less) my case was just suddenly closed without any explanation to me. Does this mean it was closed in my favor and I will receive a refund under the eBay Guarantee Policy? Or am I now screwed out of my money and the item as well? Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

You could have escalated it to eBay 3 days after the seller received it, and been refunded then. I'm not sure what you can do now, but I hope that someone knowledgeable will come along. Good luck and good golly.

I did escalate it to ebay. They were sending me messages all along. I'm just wondering if this was closed in my favor...do they usually tell you that information or not?

You should be able to view the closed case in Ebay Resolution center to see the details.
There is a link to Resolution center at the bottom of this page.

If you find that payment has not been refunded & eBay has closed this case, if your transaction processing agent was PayPal or you used your credit card you can contact either of them to open a case for a refund

I'm going to something like what you went through I purchased an item from eBay by the time that the item came because it took so long I just went ahead and purchased a new item so I refused that item that came I didn't even open the box I just refused it and sent it back got a tracking number and everything it track back to the seller and eBay close the case I'm out money and eBay tends to side with the seller's 90% of the time I think eBay is actually a scam that's just my opinion and yes I'm mad how could they make a decision about without notifying you that's crooked so the seller has my money and the item and I get nothing it's sad when you do business with someone and they find it time to cheat you that's crazy

I have never come across a case being closed without an explanation.
As your original post does not provide sufficient information please copy and paste notice of closure message that you received from eBay.
And no doubt a more knowledgeable person on this forum will respond.

I refused that item that came
I didn't even open the box I just refused it and sent it back
got a tracking number and everything it track back to the seller
eBay close the case I'm out money
so the seller has my money and the item and I get nothing
When you refuse a delivery @levinrobinso_0 eBay considers it Delivered, you won''t get a refund, and your feedback is blocked or removed.
But the eBay Money Back Guarantee is just an option; you're never required to use the MBG. Instead, there are higher options beyond the MBG to get a refund.
So if you paid with PayPal, open an Item Not Received dispute here, then go back immediately and click Escalate to PayPal at the bottom. Following, wait (don't respond if the seller contacts you e.g. to close the case) up to 11 days for your refund.
Otherwise, if you paid with a credit card, file a chargeback for Credit Not Processed. Your credit card considers Refused Delivery to be a valid way to return your item.
| Why Would a Customer File a Chargeback With Reason Code “Credit Not Processed?” “Credit Not Processed” chargebacks are filed by customers who have canceled their purchase or returned their purchase but did not receive a credit/refund from the merchant. |
