Return to Sender Question / Just Curious

A buyer returned an item to me today because it was the wrong size/didn't fit, and it was his obligation to cover shipping on the return.  No arguments there.

The returned item arrived today in a completely new package, and my original shipping label was removed from the package I shipped the item in and affixed to this new package.  Return to Sender was handwritten on the package, and there was a sticker from USPS on the package that read: Return to Sender/Refused/Unable to Forward/Return to Sender.

Is this a USPS loophole to return something without paying postage or am I missing something?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Re: Return to Sender Question / Just Curious

In this situation, yes. The buyer knew USPS wouldn't take an opened package and planned strategically to stiff the USPS on paying for a new label. That's not how package refusal is intended to work.

As with any service, people will game the system. You have to hope the abuse is not to a level where USPS will begin to charge for refused/RTS First Class & Priority packages.

If it offers any solace, you shouldn't be charged by USPS, either, for an RTS. Upward and onward and all...

Unless it was a media mail or parcel select/retail ground shipment, that is.

It was USPS First Class, so maybe I'll get my $5.82 returned?!

Re: Return to Sender Question / Just Curious

If $5.82 is what you paid for the original outbound label to the buyer, then no, you will not get a refund. The label was used. Just because the buyer rejected the package that's not grounds for a refund. USPS did their job and you paid for the service.

You can refund minus any out of pocket costs such as original shipping.

It wasn't clear in your first post @thepeetflix.

1. Did the buyer file a formal return request or has this all been through messages.

2. Did you charge a separate ship cost on the initial sale or did you offer free shipping?

If the buyer filed a formal return request because the item didn't fit, then you can only withhold the original shipping cost if you charged a separate shipping cost. If you offered free shipping you will have to refund that money.

If the buyer hasn't filed a formal return request that muddies things.
