I have tried to return a faulty item but the seller has closed the return. How do I get eBay to intervene as surely they have to accept a return of a faulty item.

Not enough information.
Did you follow eBay's protocol for returning faulty items per the Money Back Guarantee?
You had 30 days past the delivery of the faulty item to open an item not as described case in the Resolution Center. Did you do that?
If so, did you then return after 96 hours and ask eBay to step in?
The seller probably did not close the return, you probably neglected at least one of the above steps.

Did you open the right type of return request? Under item not as described/does not work/defective?
It is important to open the right type of return request, some return requests can be closed by a seller without a return or refund to the buyer:
Example: Return request: Reason: does not like/change mind - this type of return request can be closed by a seller because it falls under buyer's remorse and not item not as described.

as others have mentioned its best to choose the correct reason
returns can be denied if the seller has a no returns policy and you pick out the wrong reason
does not fit. did not like it are all legitimate reasons but are not strong enought to force a return
in order to force a return you have to choose broken,does not work.significantly not as described
these reasons are not a remorse returns and cant be stopped
