Seller sent some shoes with no shipping box, just tape wrapped around the flimsy shoe box. It was crushed in transit and the shoes were damaged. I asked for a return and the seller resisted. I opened a case and gave photos of the damage. eBay accepted the return and gave me a return shipping label. I sent them back and they were delivered over a week ago.
Then the seller opened a separate case. I didn’t know what I was doing and I thought the issue was resolved because the return was finished, so I clicked to close (fatal error, I know). The eBay instructions about these cases really aren’t very clear and I’ve never dealt with this before. They say they won’t reopen the case or do an appeal. Now the seller has the shoes and my money.
What can I do at this point? Will I have any luck with a PayPal claim?

Once a case is closed, it's closed. However have you tried opening a 2nd case on the same item? Or tried the eBay Resolution Center? If you you paid with PayPal then , you're best bet is with that, which is fortunate, because with eBay ditching PayPal now, it will be harder and there won't be a 2nd option to file a claim for buyers/sellers like there is/was with PayPal. It's tough if the seller is not communicating with you and being uncooperative.

Following is just for your information and clarification.
Contract is between you and seller and not between you and eBay.
eBay is a platform on which sellers and buyers carry out transactions.
Your seller accepted the return and your seller paid eBay to provide you with a pre paid return label.
Noted that you closed the case in error and you have not stated if you contacted your seller and what was his response. You should contact seller and ask for refund advising him that you made a mistake in closing the case. I don't expect him to be very helpful as you have already stated that he resisted your request for return which implies he did not agree with your opinion that item was damaged.
You have stated "Then the seller opened a separate case".
Kindly advise what was that case and what happened to that case?

Either contact Paypal or your credit card company and see if they will be able to get your money back. The only way a seller could open a case against you is if they put you sent back a different item than what was sent I believe.

I know, right? He sent the shoes in the shoe box only, with the lid taped down and a label stuck on the top. There are even finger holes on the edge of the lid that were just exposed. And the guy had the nerve to resist a return and deny that they could be damaged.

Ok I started a claim with PayPal and I have my fingers crossed. Thanks

It was a shoebox with the lid taped down and a label stuck in top. Even had the little finger holes exposed, so the shoes were dirty inside.
The guy had some nerve refusing the return in the first place.

Don't wait @lineskogans go back right now and click Escalate to PayPal.
Then when you're instructed to return the shoes, upload the tracking number already delivered back to the seller, to get your refund. If you seller contacts you, e.g. promising a refund if you'll close the case, do not respond; just wait for your automatic refund.
