I would not trust the seller. They may be very nice people, I have no idea, however, I'm not going to trust the seller if they are asking me to do something outside of norm on such an expensive item.
It may be true that you can't do exchanges thru a return, it has been a while since I've looked but I thought a seller could offer an exchange once the item was returned, but I wouldn't advise it anyway, it muddies the water, I like each transaction to be it's own.
IF I were in your shoes, I would open a return with the reason "item does not match the photos or description", that is one that is for an eBay money back guarantee. I would attach photos to that return request (you can add up to 10). I believe you have to add the photos before submitting the return request, I don't think you have a opportunity after.
The seller would have 3 days to send you a return shipping label, but I also think you can see their address once the return request has been submitted.....so if they did send a label you could at least verify the address was accurate.
I would probably use my own label and pay the shipping so I could insure it and get a signature confirmation for an item that expensive.
If you want to follow their instructions you are risking all of your protection thru eBay.
