I bought an item that was so badly made it didn't actually fit my van so started a return. Unfortunately I chose the wrong option - doesn't fit- which meant I was to pay for the postage back. Of course it didn't fit because it was badly made not because I'd made a mistake in ordering. Anyway, the seller doesn't want to refund me because I'm the first to say this for the product, but I don't accept this: it will only fit if I break the tabs. I've now cancelled the return so that I can restart with the correct reason, but Ebay won't let me!! I don't want the item!

Before you open a dispute at PayPal, try to Sign up to get Return Shipping on Us to see if PayPal is still able to reimburse you for the return postage.

You only get one shot at eBay return per item and one return in PayPal
At this of course u can't open a return 4 item thru eBay but eBay seller has 2 accept the return but if doesn't fit was your reason 4 return u would b paying 4 return shipping but still entitled 2 your full purchase price refund,
it actually is not the sellers fault that the item is not constructed well that is often the fact when u choose 2 buy a product online that u can not see and handle in person.
From your post it appears u did in fact choose the right reason 4 your return thru eBay.
2nd choose could be" defective"
your case in PayPal gives u a 2nd chance 2 get your money back
Good luck and stay safe

Sorry but how can you say it's not the seller's fault if they sell a defective product??

I didn't use Paypal for this payment. I've asked my credit card company to recover the money. The seller keeps insisting I need to go through the normal Ebay returns procedure but have explained the situation to him and asked him to supply a postage label for me...but it seems he doesn't want to.

Actually, there are quite a few businesses, both online and B&M, that sell less than quality goods. Usually, these can be detected by the low prices being asked for the item. A truly defective item is one that because of some flaw is not able to perform the function for which it is intended but is of the same quality that the manufacturer normally produces. If the product purchased is a cheaply made purse from a sows' ear, one cannot claim that it is defective because it is not made of silk.

If you closed or lost the case you cannot reopen it. The seller is not required to pay the return shipping on a remorse return so you're pretty much out of luck on that count. Unfortunately, since you didn't use PayPal, you don't have the opportunity to utilize their dispute system. I'm not sure what type of dispute that you opened with your credit card company, but I don't see how you could claim unauthorized use under the circumstances that you described.
