Replacing an item without doing a return?

Hello,
I recently sold a collectible envelope to somebody. They claimed it has a fold down the middle, and want me to replace it with a different one. I was planning on just sending him another one and letting him keep the damaged one. Is there a way he can pay for shipping without doing a proper return?

If the item was damaged, why should he /she pay for a replacement?  Just tell them that you will send them a new one at cost.  The alternative is for him/her to open an item NOT described case, you send a shipping label  that YOU pay and they return it and you refund fully and then they have to rebuy the item and repay the shipping.  Which choice is more cost effective for you?
