This is my first return on Ebay, so I'm a bit confused on how it works.

 

I sent a request for a refund because the item I purchased arrived damaged. I sent pictures and a comment explaining the problem. I get two messages from Ebay the next day. One saying that the seller refunded the money, and another saying that I should be receiving a return shipping label by June 2, 2018.

 

 

Here's where I get confused though. In my order history, the item is listed under cancelled orders, rather than returned and cancelled orders. I didn't cancel the order, I received it, but it arrived damaged. It's also showing on that same screen "Status: You requested a return, the seller should respond soon" then right under that, it's saying "Return on this item is closed." So then is it closed or is it still open?

 

Also, on the item listing, it stated that the seller does not accept retuns. Now I can understand why they refunded the purchase so quickly, but does that mean I'm also stuck with the damaged item and can't return it? If they have a no return policy, should I still be expecting the return label? Shouldn't the return request still be open if I'm waiting for the return label?

 

If the seller has a no return policy, and the item arrived damaged, but I was refunded, is that it, is the transaction done? Will they still be expecting the damaged item back even though they have a no return policy and refunded the money, or am I stuck with the defective item?

 

I just don't want to be stuck with the damaged item then accused of not returning it to the seller. I still have a few days to recieve the return label according to the Ebay email. But the no return policy makes it seem like they won't want the item back? Should I contact the seller?

If the seller really wanted the item back, they would have required you to return it before refunding you. Think about it — if they have already refunded you in full, what incentive do you have to send the item back? They have given away all their leverage over you.

 

Sometimes sellers will refund you right away because processing the return is too much of a hassle.

 

As to the seller's "no returns" policy, smart sellers understand that eBay's process for handling Significantly Not As Described disputes trumps their relutance to accept returns.

eBay may have refunded your money without consent from the seller. I would send one polite message to the seller letting them know that you are willing to return the item if they provide a shipping label. If you don't get a response, hold on to the item until June 3, then if you still don't have a label, dispose of it as you see fit.

 

In any case, you won't be "stuck" with the item past June 3, and you won't be accused of anything.

Regardless of the seller's return policy, if they want it back before they refund on a damaged/not as described return, they should send you a return label.

 

If I sell you a $200 vintage non-breakable and you say it's not as described, I'm going to want it back before I give you a reund (because I know it is fine and I'm going to resell it).

 

If I sell you a unique studio pottery vase and it's clearly busted up (because you showed me pictures), I'm not going to want it back.  Why would I pay more money in return shipping to get it back?  I'll just refund and cut my losses.

 

Every once in awhile, a seller issues a refund without requiring a return by mistake.  They simply hit the wrong button.  If that is the case, you'll likely be receiving a message asking you to return it (on their dime).  Not all buyers will oblige.  Good ones will (as long as the seller pays)

 

Check your PP account and make sure the transaction shows the refund.

Hold onto the shorts for a few days and see if the seller contacts you.
