Question on Mail Intercept

Today, I called USPS over an issue that arose New Years Eve. The buyer insisted the package was lost in transit because it was supposed to have arrived that day and had not and requested refund although did not open a request. Got a little insistent and said they no longer wanted the item because they ordered another one when my package didn't arrive that day. Finally got them to agree to let me check it out with USPS after New Years Day. I said if it arrived and they didn't want, I did want the package back. They responded with a let's see if it arrives which I'm interpreting as they think it won't anyway.

Fast forward.  I talked to USPS and they suggested to intercept the package which I did. They said it will keep moving to their post office to the point that it says 'out for delivery ' and then will start the trek back to me.

Like a good seller, I followed up.  Told the buyer this would help expedite the return and now they're coming back and saying, "I never said I didn't want it and they want the package." At this point, I see they opened the refund request officially. USPS told me not to refund them until the package is back to me but am worried about that.

Also worried about feedback.  Should I have intercepted? My gut with them pushing for the initial refund now was they were hoping to get the item for free. It was close to $100 so not small change by any means. I've never had anything like this happen. Was I not correct in doing the intercept? I'm an intermittent seller so I don't do this everyday.  Been trying to declutter my mom's estate mostly these days when I have a few spare minutes.

Question on Mail Intercept

With this kind of buyer, the intercept is fine, especially, if the request to cancel was through the ebay messages.

Do not just refund unless buyer opens a dispute, but if so wait till the deadline is near to be sure he doesn't get it anyway.  Otherwise since intercepts are not guaranteed, wait till you see the tracking that is on it way back to you before cancelling the transaction for "buyer request", which will also refund.  Do not just refund.
