So I have a small problem and I am confused. I ordered a video game in like new condition and when I got it I saw the seller hadn't properly padded the envelope and the game case was smashed. The game still worked but since I paid specifically for "like new" I sent the seller a message asking for a small discount. Seller never answers and I send him one last message asking to return the item. He responds by just saying the game works and doesn't say anything else. I open a return request and hope he accepts within three business days. He doesn't and then ebay sends an email saying I got a full refund for the item because the seller never responded. I thought I had to open a case first? The email says nothing about returning the item and I haven't gotten any return shipping label from ebay or the seller so I'm confused as to what to do. Thanks if anyone can help me out. This is the first time I've ever had problems with a seller before and I don't know what to do.

You filed a Returns Request. The seller had 3 days to reply. If no reply, the buyer usually steps in and clicks on Ask ebay to step in, at which point ebay can refund you in full and NOT require you to send the item back. Perhaps this step is now automated. In any event, you do not need to send the item back to the seller.

You opened a return request... the seller didn't do anything to settle the case, so after a certain amount of time has passed, eBay will just refund you.
You don't have to return it if you've been refunded, you get your money back and get to keep the item.
