This is a total new one.
Sold two expensive items. Bought ebay postage and slapped labels on. Delivered to post office.
The local postal idiots scanned the boxes in at the post office as delivered instead of received and outgoing.
So now my customers who just paid are going nuts and filing claims. Opened a trace with post office and they called and confirmed that they have them, they are being delivered. And that postal idiots scanned them wrong.
Problem is they still show up in eBay as delivered to my city. Not with updated tracking info. My worry is eBay is going to view the post office tracking information online as legit. Even if my local post office provides me with documentation the system is wrong. So I am totally at the mercy of the morality of my buyers now because ebay basically refunds almost no questions asked now.
Has anybody else dealt with this?

That happens once in awhile.
Tracking should update after a few scans.

I would say wait a few days and see if there is any changes in the tracking. Of course notify the buyer of this and state you have been in contact with USPS. Ebay does take into account errors. I am not saying don't worry about it but it's something you want to keep on top of daily. There is still time.

I hope so. I will sleep a lot better once it does.

I also believe the old tracking number gets linked to the newer one as it is updated, so the package, despite saying delivered, will still have a travel history.

Go to your local post office, they can see movement on the package with the tracking number , and where it is located and when is is expected to be delivered, keep your coustomers informed. I had this happen and kept the coustomers updated up to day of deliverly

I've had this happen, you can still track on the USPS site but ebay shows already delivered. Just tell your customers to check the USPS tracking and ignore ebay.

^^^^^ This!
Once eBay's system sees a Delivered scan they stop updating the tracking for that shipment so while USPS will update (usually within 24 hours) the eBay tracking will never change.
Sometimes this happens as it did for the OP (post Office mistake) but most often it happens with carrier pickup when the carrier is mostly hitting the Delivered button on their scanner.
The USPS tracking will update as soon as it gets to the first processing center.

INSTRUCT YOU BUYER in a message warning them that they need to look at the tracking updating on the USPS.Com NOT ebay tracking. Assure them the package is on the way and tell them how this happened with the package mistakenly getting scanned as delivered with the first scan. They should understand.

You will not be harmed by ebay because their system is not tracking the package. USPS.COM has the accurate info on the tracking of the package. Any problems with ebay or the buyer can be resolved by the official tracking info on USPS.COM.

DON’T WORRY, BE HAPPY! IT’S BEING TRACKED ON USPS.COM.
