Priority mail as media mail

Why can't I ship out books on ebay in a priority mail box under media mail?

Priority boxes can only be shipped as Priority by postal rules.

Priority mail price includes the convenience of free boxes. If you want to ship cheaper than you need your own box. 

They are around everywhere if you ask a neighbor or at the store.

 You certainly "could" ship books in a Priority Mail box with a Media Mail label on it.  However, when the USPS APC system catches the discrepancy you will be back charged for the difference between Media Mail and Priority. 

But with the way things are jammed up in the USPS these days and Media Mail gets treated as a second class citizen, why would you choose that kind of a headache for yourself?

You cannot use Priority Mail Boxes or Envelopes for anything other than Priority Mail shipping.  If you do you will be billed and owe them the additional postage.  You need to find your own boxes for Media Mail.  You also need to be familiar with media mail requirements and not ship items that do not qualify.
