Printing shipping labels

Can shipping labels be printed on colored paper rather than white paper?  I have a ream of pale blue paper I need to use up and was thinking of using it for printing my shipping labels.

Re: Printing shipping labels

The USPS says: "All USPS shipping labels should be printed in black ink on a white background with the exception of the additional information and user section which may include color if desired."  However, it is not a hard rule and AFAIK as long as the label is machine readable it won't be a problem.

Would like to know if any other sellers use pastel colored paper for shipping labels????

Re: Printing shipping labels

Stick with the white myself, as I buy by the case.

I have had things come in with other than white.

As long as there is enough contrast between your ink, and the color of the paper you should be fine.

Holiday season  we were instructed to separate/tray  the colored outgoing cards(especially the red ones) as they did not process well on the machines that read the addresses.

Re: Printing shipping labels

Official policy, as other have stated is white paper, but I use anything I can find and use, cover them fully with clear shipping tape (sometimes 2+ layers) and have had no issues.

If colored paper, it's usually only lighter, pastel colors, but have used darker colors like red a few times with no issues.

I use old paper I have from the 1970's that has yellowed and browned, yellow legal pad paper, clean sides of old printouts (like back of a single sheet 2017 calendar I printed last year and last year's USPS and FedEx printed price sheets), office printer booboos (as long as nothing personally identifiable or than might offend is there), clean back side of junk mail pages, and pieces cut from the backs of junkmail, greeting card, and other envelopes when they are big enough (like 6x8 or bigger).

Pretty much anything I can shove in my laser printer sheet feeder gets used as label stock. I use clean 20lb bond when I'm out of recycle paper or I have an inkling it would be wise to do so based on buyer and purchase/package type.

Zero problems from USPS, FedEx, or buyers to date.

I also use my old wall calendar pages as item wrapping sometimes, and the fronts of greeting cards as backing stiffeners/protectors in poly and padded bubble mailers when appropriate. Waste nothink.

White offers the best possible contrast between the background and black ink. The important thing is for the label to be legible by both humans (the carrier needs to read the address, obviously) and machines (scanner has to recognize the bar code).

I suspect that policy is in place so that in case there is a problem with legibility, USPS can say, "Hey, we told you to use white paper."
