It all depends on the RULES of their order. The Bishop and elders decide what is allowed and what's not.
I know Amish that live in complete poverty, but Amish of another order across the street from them are more affluent. And they have no dealings with each other.
They can use power tools (mainly gas powered) on jobs. I've been to Amish stores like bent n dents that use battery (or generator) power for cash registers, but not for lighting. It all depends on the rules of their order (or group). Wells for water... I have seen windmills and gas powered pumps. Some have indoor plumbing while others use outhouses (or even rent a johns)
Honestly, it is the most fragmented religion I have seen. I love the people, though. They are friendly, outgoing and down to earth. Once they trust you.
