Possible scam: USPS tracking say delivered and the delivery proof has my signature, but did not sign

Hi All,

To start off, I am really worried. 

I bought a camera worth 700$ from a seller. Paid for it using paypal through ebay. 

The sell updated a usps tracking number. But I observed that for 5 days, the tracking just said "Shipping Label Created, USPS Awaiting Item".

I contacted the seller and he said it was dropped off and something with USPS could be off. 

just before the expected delivery day, i see an update saying the package "Arrived at USPS Regional Destination Facility" and the following day it "Arrived at Post Office", "Out for Delivery" and 
"Delivered, Left with Individual". 

I had requested a proof of delivery as well. 

I received an email saying it was delivered and the attached PDF proof of delivery says i signed for it with my initials and a weird electronic signature. 

But I was home, because I work from home. My wife was home.

None of us signed for it. 

Does any one have any suggestions on what could have happened? is this a known scam? 

what steps can i take.?

I have not heard of such a scam, this would certainly qualify as a serious felony, falsifying signature of the recipient etc.  Because the scan shows that it was delivered, don't waste time contacting ebay or the seller. You need to visit your local postmaster and demand to investigate the situation. Which letter carrier delivered the package, how did he/she obtain "your" signature, what was the time of the delivery etc?

Before you visit, prepare a written statement, which you will present to the postmaster, stating the facts as you presented them here. You may also include a sample of your signature, i.e. how you would sign the delivery so it can be compared with the weird signature shown in the email. Insist that they initiate an official investigation.

Is there a chance that a family member signed for the delivery? Or perhaps a neighbor?

It sounds like your seller mailed, signature required, to another address in your zipcode. Then the person at that address read your name on the address label, wrote your initials, and signed for you.

You should confirm with the postmaster at any USPS post office, doesn't have to be your post office @harshagowdas1 

- that it was not your address on the shipping label without revealing the actual address

- get it in writing that it's not your address on that tracking number, then

- start a Return* this item > Missing parts or pieces case

- at eBay to begin the process for your refund.

*if you start an item not received case, it will close without a refund because tracking shows delivered

This was an issue with USPS. They sent me a delivered notification that it was delivered to a person but they left it in my mail box. On the proof of delivery, they also had my signature. Unbelievable and very unprofessional and possibly illegal. I have  reported it to USCIS.

They do these thing sometimes.  During the covid lockdown it was common not to get a signature and the package just left at door or in mail box.
