When a buyer requests a return for a defective item, does Ebay automatically require buyers to pay return shipping? I agreed to a return and on the next screen popped up options for me buying a return label. Is this just an option IF I want to buy them a return label or a requirement per Ebay policy? It has been quite a while since I had a return for a bad item, but in the past I seem to recall the buyer shipping it back on thier own without me paying. Now in this case, I did go ahead and click the option to buy a label through Ebay but never really saw a confirmation that I had purchased a label... I did however see a messae that I provided return info... is that my indication that I bought a label for them?
Another question... I clicked accept the return and then saw a message saying wait until I get the item back before issuing refund but right below that is a big blue " Issue Refund" box to click. If I click that box, does the buyer automatically get the refund and my Paypal is debited, or is clicking that just an agreement to issue refund once the item gets back to me and the tracking is verified by Ebay's system?

That would send them a full refund IMMEDIATELY. Don't click it until you get the item back.

A defective item=not as described so eBay requires the SELLER to pay for return shipping. You need to accept the return. Do not click the “issue refund” button!! If you do, the return label you sent via eBay goes away and the buyer gets a refund NOW and does not have to return the item.

If an item is defective, the seller pays return shipping.
In the return, you have an option to send a return shipping label yourself, or have Ebay send one to the buyer.
If you click the Issue Refund button, it will send the refund from your Pay Pal account and the buyer will not be required to send the item back.

For INAD,you will be paying for return shipping, you can either send a label your self or if it is escalated to EBAY involvement and buyer wins,Ebay will send the label for you.
Buyer will see the label in the case and print the label.
Once he takes it to the post office and accepted, the postage would be charged t o your seller account.

Ok guys, that was just a mistake that I typed is the "buyer" required to pay return shipping, I meant seller. And is that a change in policy in the last couple years... maybe I'm misremembering but I would swear I recall the buyer sending it back on thier own. Is the "buyer pays return shipping" ONLY for cases where buyer admits remorse? As for selecting to buy a label through Ebay which I did click but never saw a message confirming that I had bought a label and the buyer would be recieving it... will I only know that the buyer is aware they are getting a label paid for by me AFTER they send it and it is scanned through USPS and my account is debited? As of now, I only see a short message saying I sent buyer return info and I am not sure if that justr means I accepted return and gave them my return address.

You will not see the return label, but it would be just like the one you sent, except return address will be buyer's address and the ship to would be your address.
weight and method of shipment would be same as the original label/
once tracking shows delivered, either you or Ebay robot will refund in full.
if you find problem withe return, you can appeal

You won't see a confirmation of the purchased label because when you click on Have eBay supply label, the cost of the label will not be on your invoice until the buyer presents the package to the USPS and it gets scanned in the system. If he changes his mind and never sends it back, you won't be charged for it.
