I recently purchased 18 skeins of yarn, but unfortunately when I got it 11 of them were (not seller's fault, pictures only show so much) different than I expected. 7 would work for my project. Because the seller had paid for the shipping I felt bad about them losing out entirely on the order, so I divided the cost, added a few extra dollars to help on shipping and offered to keep the seven skeins I wanted and return the rest. They replied with one sentence, telling me to just return what I don't want... I guess I need a bit more of a verbal agreement to feel comfortable. Now my question is, should I ask the seller to make a new listing for the 7 skeins, or just return the ones I don't want? I want to make sure however I do this I'm protected because it's a pretty significant amount of money. Thank you

They can do that. I would confirm they are willing to do that in eBay messages first. I assume they would because you are kindly offering to cover a part of the shipping. And I would open an official return request in the system.

ebay does not have a function for partial return/refunds so you will have to work it out w seller
(tell them exactly what you are returning the amount of the refund you are requesting)and either trust them to refund or not

I'm sure the seller is honest, I just hadn't encountered this situation before. I stated explicitly what I wanted to keep and the cost I wanted to pay for them, but something in me is telling me this could possibly leave the both of us unprotected- after all, the seller is just counting on me to be honest as well, and I don't want them to feel uncomfortable with the transaction either. Thank you for the information.

Okay, new question : I've thought about it, and sending back a partial return doesn't sit right with me. It leaves it too open to problems for both of us. I don't honestly care if I keep the seven skeins of yarn- it's not as nice as it looked- I just didn't want the seller to have wasted the money for the free shipping. I printed off the return label and my estimate is 17 dollars. Can I just tell the seller to refund my full amount minus ten dollars to help cover the "free" shipping (which I know is not actually free for the seller). Will they be able to do that? To clarify, that means I'm paying my own return shipping plus ten dollars of the shipping the seller paid.

Thank you! I just sent them a message and requested they verbally agree to that so it's on record. I appreciate the input.
