Never dealt with this before

A seller sold me a coat saying it was large and it is extra small. it wasnt a mixup. He just described it that wrongly, so I said I wanted to return it. He outright refunded me with no case and said to send it (clearly doesnt know thats not a good thing to do). I was going to return as misdescribed since it wasnt my fault & have him pay the shipping, but with what he did, I would have to contact ebay to figure out how to handle it. decided to just pay $20 myself rather than deal w it. when trying to return it, usps said it was going to be $45. he made a prepaid label and it snuck through when $20 wasnt enough. not gonna pay that for all of his mistakes. if i tell him he will need to send $45 to ship it, especially when he thinks $20 is what it cost him, he will think i’m trying to hold his item ransom, but I think its unavoidable. is there a simpler fix?

Then your seller handled it poorly. The coat is yours, the refund is yours.

You know your taking  big risk sending it back without eBay involvement, right? No Buyer Protection doing that.

What is it about the coat that it's going to cost that much? Is it due to the size of the box or something?  Have you checked UPS?

Never sell anything on eBay that you can't afford to lose.

i already have the funds. he refunded me without opening a case. i have both the funds & the jacket. i could just do nothing, but would like for him to get his item back. its the distance (mainly this) and the size of the box. resizing the box would barely alter the price since it would barely be able to be resized and while ups will likely be cheaper, it wont cut it down to $20.

As nice as the seller was to refund without question, you still need to file a return request to get the appropriate shipping label.  UNLESS the seller sends you more money to cover the full cost of the return shipping.  (Not sure what kind of label he "snuck through" for only $20...???)

Things like this happen and usually it wouldn't be a problem, but the coat is probably heavy and "oversized" by USPS standards... that's any side being more than 12" in length.  I'm sure the seller knew this as he had to ship it initially.

If the seller has sent a return label and it is underpriced, the seller will be invoiced for the shipping difference.

What buyer protection? The buyer has both the coat and the refund. Depending on the zones it may cost that much. I guess a coat would need a box of 18 x 18 x 18 and would weight at least 3 lbs incl the box. Mailed for example from VA to FL via Priority mail the postage is $52, depending on the zones. UPS ground, the cheapest is $54 for the same package.

Of course, if the weight is less and the box smaller, the postage goes down.
