I am brand new selling my first item.
I want to include free shipping to make it easy.
How can I limit my free shipping to the 48 states?
If I allowed the whole US, would shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico be much higher?
Any advice for the newby would be appreciated. I have an item I am planning to use USPS first class.

From Indiana, you would have Zone 8 buyers in California, Oregon, and Washington which would cost the same as shipping to AK, HI and PR. IMHO there's no reason for you to exclude any US buyer.

We can't answer your question without knowing your location. For most eBay sellers, shipping to AK, HI, and PR costs no more than shipping to farther buyers within the 48 states.
There is an area in the Midwest from which all of the contiguous states are Zone 7 or closer but for most sellers there are plenty of buyers in the 48 states who are in Zone 8 and therefore postage to them would be the same as to HI etc. Even if you are in that central area, the cost difference between Zone 7 (i.e., both coasts) and Zone 8 (HI etc.) would be only a few cents. Here are the online prices for First Class package postage:
NOTE: These rates will all increase 25 cents next week.

When setting up the listing you will see the option to exclude areas when you get to the shipping section.
If on a phone , don't know if you will see it.
Using the "advance listing form" may also be needed.
