I sold an item. Buyer took five days to pay for it. No message responded to when I sent message or invoice, had to open case. Paid for it, I shipped immediately. Buyer received, and after about four days, said item wasn’t as described (it was exactly as described), and wanted to return. I agreed, even though it matched the description. Ebay told me buyer had 30 business days. I sent repeated messages, asking buyer to please let me know if the return was still happening, etc. No response. The day before case closes, I get a message that it’s being sent back that day. Also said couldn’t respond to my previous messages because of serious circumstances. No tracking number left for me. Case closes. Days later, I get the item back. It was shipped AFTER the case closed, not the day the buyer stated they would ship on EBay. I’m not sure what to do. Meanwhile, the buyer who has had “serious circumstances” and couldn’t respond to me or ship it back in 30 business days, has in the past month, a multitude of feedback and other purchases, as evident from their page. I’m being played. What do I do?

You have the item back, so refund the buyer ... I'm not sure what else you are thinking. You can report the buyer, but I don't see where the buyer really did anything wrong or "played" you.
He's just slow.

The buyer had been on Ebay the entire month, buying and responding to others, just not to me. They had 30 business days. How do you NOT return something in a 30 business day period? I've never had a return, and I've never dealt with anyone like this. You're not slow if you've been doing business on Ebay with the exception of business with me.

I wouldn't do anything.

Whatever the reason, I don't know ... for me, the bottom line is that the item was returned, and so I would refund the money if this happened to me.
Others have said "do nothing" ... and, yes, eBay is not going to force you to refund because the case closed without a documented return. However, keep in mind that the buyer has two other avenues to pursue if they are wise - they can file a claim with PayPal, and they can file a charge-back with their debit card/credit card. They have a 6-month or more time frame to file through these other paths.
