I am having trouble contacting both ebay and my seller regarding an item I returned for refund.

Did you open an actual return or just send it back to them?

I did both filed for return and sent it back. I contacted the seller, he said just return it and he'd refund my payment. So after I gave the envelope to the mailman to return item, I get a message from ebay saying to print a shipping label and Paypal would charge me for it. PLus messages to say don't forget to send item back,,,,,,, " mark as shipped" " tracking number" but can't do either as it won't let me.
It was at that point I got concerned and tried contacting ebay to let them know the seller says he never received it, and I was having trouble contacting him and finding contact info for ebay to get help there too.
I am afraid I will get screwed because I did not PAY extra to get a delivery confirmation/tracking number from the USPS but instead wrote return to sender and simply gave it to my mailman. Now my seller will not answer emails and ebay is making me wait till 9/12/17 for the next step to be possible. Such a pain.

Unfortunately, it sounds as though you started the return process correctly, but did not read through the instructions. Not reading and following the recommended steps of the procedure probably means that not only are you no longer in possession of the item you purchased, you will not be receiving a refund either, as there is no way to prove you returned it.

Why did you cheat the post office? You needed to pay to send the item back. You can't mark it "return to sender". As stated this is self-inflected pain. You did not follow the rules. You gave up your buyer protection when you essential refused the package. When you return something like this, don't cheat the PO mark it "return to sender". Pay to ship it back.
