Hello, I recently bought some CDs and they were shipped via USPS. The tracker said "DELIVERED FRONT DOOR/PORCH" and indicated the time, but no item came as I was outside working and would've saw the letter carrier drop it off. Before I lodge a ticket with eBay, is there any thing special I need to do? I know once the item is turned over to the delivery service, anything could happen to the items.
Thanks.

I wouldn't contact your seller yet.
Give it a few days and sometimes things get corrected and these packages show up.
I'd wait a few days.
Waiting a few days has it down sides too. First and foremost, people forget. The carrier most likely handles lots and lots of packages. With each day that goes by, their memory may not be as clear.
It is not likely that it was scanned delivered yet it isn't really going to get delivered for a few days. While certainly it does happen, it isn't the common problem. So the more time that passes the less likely this problem will have a good outcome.
It is more likely that the item was delivered to the wrong home and the sooner it is found, the quicker it will get to its rightful home.

The OP is the buyer. They can contact their postal carrier or post office whenever they want. That doesn't involve the seller.

I NEVER said it did.

Well then what is the point of the OP contacting their seller?

This happened to one of my buyers last week. They opened an INR. I replied and advised them to check with their local PO & carrier and to check with neighbors and family/flatmates. This was on a Friday and I told them that if the package didn't arrive by Monday I would call their PO to try and help. The package ended up being delivered on Monday. Nine times out of ten the package turns up within a few days or it can be located through the GPS scan from the USPS.

Hi @kimmikat61, I don't blame you for being confused. You've gotten conflicting advice, some of which is suitable to your situation.
Do contact your postal carrier as soon as possible for all the reasons stated. What are you waiting for? You don't have to make a trip to the post office if you can snag your carrier. They're who may remember what they did. Whatever you're going to do, do it sooner rather than later.
Do not contact your seller yet. What would you ask them to do? Commiserate? Because that's about all they could do. Many sellers would not take it well, and would instead think that you're angling for a refund, a partial refund or a replacement, which they do not owe you. The mistake took place on your end, not theirs. Should your own investigation reveal some way they can help you, that they are somehow at fault, you can contact them then. Good luck!

The USPS is a federal entity, and if they says it has been delivered the only thing is to file a police report.

Totally wrong, lol.
Contact your local Post Office and ask for the Postmaster (the big boss......this is their job!).
USPS uses GPS so the Postmaster should be able to tell you exactly where the carrier delivered it. If the carrier miss-delivered then the Postmaster (their BOSS) will ask them to go do the leg work to get it back and delivered to you. If it turns out that it was delivered correctly then you could consider filing a mail theft with the appropriate authorities, i.e.; The US Postal Inspectors.

Wow, getting confused. So I should give the seller a heads up about this? I'm going to the PO in a couple days and want to be ready with deal with them.
Don't wait days!!! Believe me we deal with a lot of packages daily(usually 50 to 100 daily). I can remember individual packages from yesterday and some from Monday. From last week only a few unusual ones, I definantly wouldn't remember a box of CD's unless I had to collect postage due.

@dsaldridge99 wrote:In my city, many times the item is marked delivered on the USPS site, but doesn't actually get to my mailbox for a couple of days. It depends on how your mail handler does things. It was explained to me that as soon as it goes on the truck, it is marked delivered online, but it may not actually get delivered that day. Give it a couple of days and see what happens, then call you local PO, or put in a complaint online. I had a hard time getting anyone at my local PO to answer the phone, so I put in an inquiry online and the box was delivered the next day. Seems that if a mail carrier isn't able to finish his route for some reason, or is way behind, they will take things back to the post office to go out the next day. It's crazy, but that's the government. All I can say is, my mail carrier must NEVER be able to finish their route on time, because I never get packages delivered the day they say they are.
That should NEVER happen. Nothing is left on the trucks. Carriers can't even leave personal items on the trucks and NEVER!!! any mail.
Packages are not to be delayed or rolled unless there is a real reason. Last packages I left at the PO were simply too large for my Jeep. In those cases as soon as one of the LLV's came in from their route the Postmaster or Clerk took them out and delivered it. Often times this made it arrive sooner than if I could have taken it as the guy who gets these is at the end of my route (mine is the longest in the office).

I say that because a lot of times buyers make a mistake and actually open an INR instead of just messaging the seller. It has happened to me twice. Both were just random questions, one wanted to know if the package could be rerouted and the other if it was too late to combine shipping with an item I had just listed with a BIN. They are 2 of only 3 INR's on my record, in 14 years selling on eBay.

I call **bleep** on that statement. First contact the Postmaster and carrier. The Police will take a statement to use for your homeowners insurance but they can do very little else. Even if it is rash of porch thefts, the chances that they will catch them are slim. A rash of porch thefts reported by a few local Postmasters will have the Postal Inspectors trailing carriers including private carriers like FedEx and UPS. That is how one couple in my area were caught. I was even trailed myself, I was also one of the carriers the thieves followed to snatch packages (LOL they snatched a book on origami and a package of milk test strips).

I was outside working at the supposed delivery time, so I know the carrier didn't come by. Only saw the carrier place the normal bills, etc into the mailbox.
Anyhoo I'm going into town to the PO in the morning with the tracking # and see what's going on.
