Is there a hard timeframe for return window set by eBay for buyers?

I have a had a few returns opened in the past months where the buyer was given two weeks to send back an item on an open return and without any intervention the case stayed open past two weeks giving the buyer even more time to start the return.
For example I had a buyer open a return for a tool on 3/15. In the case details it stated he had to send the item back by 3/29. This morning (3/30) I figured he changed his mind about returning the item only to see an e-mail a few moments later that the item had finally been shipped.
So I want to know what is the actual window for a buyer to start sending the item back after a return has been opened/approved and why would eBay put in a two week window but not enforce it? We all know if the shoe was on the other foot they wouldn't give sellers a grace period or leniency to respond to a case or issue a refund

Lately, whenever the buyer decides to return the item.
Ebay has extended the time a buyer has to return an item and they have almost a month to get it shipped back.

Noted that return case was opened and accepted on 3-15-2021 and eBay's stated that buyer must post the item back by 03-29-2021.
Noted that 0n 03-30-20321 ( 1 day Past) you received a notification that item has been shipped.
It is highly likely that your buyer did post the item back on 03-29 and postal services tracking was update on 03-30 and this in turn updated eBay and onto you.
eBay in their wisdom have decided on these days and then an additional 7 to 10 days for item to be delivered (This is outside of buyers control) and after this eBay do and will enforce their policy.

Lately, as in over 12 months ago, Ebay has extended the time a buyer has to return an item, as in it was announced in the Spring Update ... the previous Spring Update:
How much time are buyers given to ship returned items?
When buyers are sent an eBay-generated return label, the return is closed if the label is not printed within 10 business days. If the buyer prints the label, we allow the return to remain open an additional 5 business days to ensure shipping scans are captured.

That's laughable. As a seller if I took 10 days to print and 15 to ship I'd be skewered.

Sellers can also extend their handling times as far out as 30 days, if they so choose, so I don't know why you say you'd be "skewered."
One of the many, many differences between buyers and sellers on eBay is that buyers are not running a business with deadlines and responsibilities. Sellers are.
Until just recently, I didn't even have a printer. As a buyer, any return labels I had to print required going to the public library which, as you may recall, was affected by the pandemic in regard to open hours, and the access to and use of public computers and printers. Even my neighbors, who will usually help out by printing something at their offices, were working from home without printers.
It's apples to oranges to compare the responsibilities of sellers to the responsibilities of buyers in regard to the deadlines for returning items.

Fair enough, I personally could not fathom having a handling time that extended. Ebay buyers aren't the most forgiving of waiting times, even when it's clearly stated.
I do see your point and appreciate the response which justifies what appears on the surface to be unfairness. Not so when you consider the separate and distinct roles of each party.
