This is a WARNING to ALL SELLERS who SHIP through Ebay. Recently I sold an item, as I have for the last 17 years. Weighed (3.86 lbs) I measured the box and provided both through Ebay's Seller Portal for Shipping. I paid $9.19 and shipped it USPS. 6 weeks later I see a charge against my Ebay account of $8.86. After a long call with Ebay they advise USPS charged me an additional $8.86 for the item I sold and added exactly TEN ADDITIONALS POUNDS to the package! Ebay advised there was nothing they could do. USPS was allowed to directly access and debit my personal Ebay account. I filed a claim with USPS. USPS advised they would research it and respond within 3 - 5 days but no longer than 15 days. 5 weeks later I still didn't have a resolve. USPS kept telling me to wait. Each time I asked I was told to wait. Finally, I told them I was going to go the Postmaster General and I wanted their "error" resolved to my satisfaction. USPS only then responded stating the dimensions weren't correct and completely ignored the 10 additional pounds they added to my package. I am of the opinion this wasn't an accident or an error. I believe this was intentional fraud committed by a USPS employee. Since Ebay takes no responsibility to protect your account this could happen to you. If this has happened to you as well, please reply to this message.

--------------------------------------------------------------
This type of charge is generally from the APV processing of the package. It is an automated charge back to the payment source generated by the scanning/weighing of the item along the way.
It sometimes happens in error.
There is basically no chance that the charge was done by a USPS employee. If an employee detected an error, a payment would have been collected as a "postage due".

You should have asked USPS to show you the image they took of the package when they did the cost adjustment. It was probably riding on another package as it went under the camera.
When I had this happen the postmaster from the destination area called me back next day after I filed my dispute and they refunded.
If I were you I would talk to my local Postmaster in person about this.

What where the dimensions of the parcel? If over 12" inches, then it is charges as "dimensional" weight and a higher fee is charged.

I agree. No USPS employee had anything to do with charging the fee. They contracted an outside company to implement this program.

That would be the approximate charge had you used a medium flat rate box instead of one not designated as such.

The very same thing happened to someone I know who sold an item on a different platform. USPS added an additional 5 - 7 pounds to an item that only weighed about 8 or 9 ounces. The person was shocked when they were asked to pay (and had to pay an additional $12 for postage) because of an error by USPS.
This is just something that people need to be aware of. When you take packages with prepaid labels to the post office you should check your receipt before leaving to make sure the USPS postal clerk has not weighed your package(s) incorrectly and added pounds to an item that only weigh ounces.
The person I know ended up having to pay the additional $12 because the wrong weight was listed on the receipt that way. Just keep this in mind that you need to check your receipts to make sure items have been weighed correctly.
