I canceled the mouse pad, because it's not going to any transit, and my mouse is mouse pad free, now I want to cancel the item, so I press return item, and a few hours later, ebay said I need to print out a label, I didn't receive the item yet, this might be a stretch.

Why is it that people keep doing this? When you don't get the item you purchased, you are supposed to open a case for ITEM NOT RECEIVED, NOT a return case! It just doesn't make sense to open a return case when you have nothing to return.
So, EBay will close the case in seller's favor because of your mistake.
You now need to go to PayPal and open the CORRECT CASE there.

IIRC, if the expected delivery date hasn't passed, buyers are shown an option to request a return but no option to file an "Item not received" claim. So they click on the only option that is shown to them.

Just by coincidence, I have an item I purchased that has an expected delivery date of between January 28 and March 11. Tracking hasn't moved since "Tracking number provided," so I'm obviously not going to get the item. (Short story is that I needed a really cheap item to qualify for an eBay discount offer. The item was $1.12.)
So, after reading this thread, I've been playing around with the listing so I could test what a buyer might see when trying to cancel an item before the expected delivery date (range, in this case).
I don't have an opportunity to cancel. Anywhere. Probably because the seller updated with a label tracking number.
I can't file an INR with any of the available links or in the Resolution Center. It just takes me to a page indicating my item is "on its way" and says it should arrive by March 11.
That leads me to believe the OP's estimated delivery date has indeed past, or s/he'd be getting the same message as I. (P.S. My issue with my little $1.12 Christmas ornament has been resolved to my satisfaction.)

But the OP said, "I want to cancel the item, so I press return item". So your observation is consistent with my speculation that he clicked on Return because there was no other option (either to cancel or to file an INR).

Return item was the only option available to buyer as the estimated date of arrival had not yet passed (to be able to open an item not received case.)
if item was $1.12, this was an inexpensive lesson!

If the item has already shipped it is too late to request a cancellation of the transaction. The OP's only option is to request a return. However, until the item has been delivered one should not open a return request since they have nothing to return.

The problem is that until the item is delivered, the OP has nothing to return and since the process only allows a limited time for them to return the item they may end up getting their case closed in the seller's favor.

Oh **bleep**, I didn't know I have to open a case, I'm an idiot, thanks for the advice.

I am such an idiot, so I don't know what to do, my package didn't came, so I press returned, I know what to do now, you don't press return, you have to open a case, thank god. 😂
