I have this merchandise with dimensions 34x32x18". It usually cost less than $200 using FedEx thru Ebay. Even when I ship directly with FedEx or UPS, it is always less than $200.
Because of Covid, my sells have slowed down so much that I stopped checking Ebay for months. So, I didn't realized FedEx waited months after shipping, and then charge me $1099.42 last November. That is about $1000 more than what I usually paid and was quoted.
I contacted Ebay, and then contacted FedEx, and it has been a nightmare dealing with FedEx. Every call a different representative with different excuses and never even bother to investigate my tracking number. Finally, after several attempts, a representative told me the reason was a surcharge due to dimensions of 79x36x18". I pointed out that was a big mistake when they measured it, but the representative told me there was nothing she could do, so she asked me to send the information to billing@fedex.com. So I did and I got a replied back, but after explaining, provided pictures proving 34x32x18", asked to contact buyer, provided other tracking numbers as reference for same merchandise, they just ignored me.
I'm tempted to ask paypal to step in, but they can only go after ebay, but the actual issue is fedex.
I learn from this mistake, and I'll add my FedEx account to ebay for future shipments. But for now, I'm being ripped off by FedEx for $1000.

This will be an uphill battle, the only thing I can say is to ask FedEx to provide evidence of the dimensional factor. Remember that when purchasing labels through eBay, you are using their shipping account which provides for discount due to their large volume. If there is an undercharge, it goes against eBay, which in turn passes it to the ends users, you in this case.

Sorry to hear. I am nervous it will eventually happen to me as I use fedex for all of my large items. so far so good, and the only things I will note are:
I have a FedEx account. If something goes wrong, I want to be able to tackle it direct with no middle man.
I have to pay close attention to every selection. There is more than one division of FedEx. And because I have pickups, the proper division must be selected to pick it up, or they can nail you.
I carefully select the service. I almost always use Home/Ground. I take a photo of the estimate.
I round up on everything. If it is 16 1/4", I enter 17". If it is 20.5 pounds, I enter in 22. My goal is to be slightly over in every way. Does it cost a couple dollars more in some cases? Maybe. But it is cheaper than getting a penalty for being over.
